Would dwarf puffers and south American puffers get along if my dwarfs are fairly well tempered?

Um...it all depends on the size of your tank, and how much coverage you provide.

Those two species of puffer have very different feeding styles in my tanks. I think that feeding incompatabilities could be possible to likely.

But I do admit to being prejudiced against co-housing different puffers together. there are so many failures and so few successes.

I agree with RTR. If you do keep multiple puffers, make them the same species, and make sure the care is similar. The PH is also very different. If you still want both puffers, just re-locate the dwarfs or SAP into a spare tank (if you can spare). Both species are foreign to each other. Not to dis way you from getting the puffers, it's just putting the puffers together in a tank any less than maybe a 30 long would cause possibly fighting or even death between different needs.

Its risky. I have a pair of dwarves and a SAP in a 40xl, which is heavily planted and 48" long. They get along just fine, but that's mainly because the dwarves are too busy hunting in the plants constantly. My SAP is also stunted and a big chicken, he runs from any fish that shows any interest in him at all, so there's no threatening behavior coming from him to antagonize him.

I probably wouldn't recommend it though, they can each have such different personalities.

IME mixing puffs hasn't been too big of a problem. Just be sure to have a tank to move the puffs if anything comes up.
