Also why would RO water be the problem? I was under the impression that it was better as it had all the electrolytes and chemical compounds removed from the water via a fine membrane?

RO is a problem because the fish need some of the minerals and things the membrane removes! I don't know how it all works, just that you need to add things back before using it in freshwater. When you use RO water to mix up saltwater, the marine mix adds back the appropriate compounds, but when you add it directly to a freshwater tank in large amounts, it is not good for the fish.
Just use your tap water, match the temperature, decholrinate it if it is city water with chlorine or cholramines added, and do it a heck of a lot more often than you already are!

i have had my mbu for a year, i only use tap water for water changes. the problem with ro is that the unit takes out all trace elements needed by fish and also oxygen. little and often changes are better may be 10% every day. Ro is better off for marine setups as the salt you put in replaces all trace elements.
