would DPs kill a ghost shrimp but not eat it?

Post by GSPdragon »

When I first set up my DP tank a couple of weeks ago I added in 2 ghost shrimp, the DP's checked them out for a bit then ignored them (the shrimp were quite a bit larger then the DP's) I realized 2 days ago I hadn't seen a shrimp in a couple days (not to strange since its a 35g hex which is HEAVILY decorated including a very large lava rock structure in the middle with lots of hiding spots that is covered in java moss, I rarely even see the 3 otos who live in there). Anyways I did a water change yesterday and discovered the deceased pink body of one of the shrimp... it was intact from what I could see though. So I'm wondering if the shrimp died on its own, or if the DPs killed it? No sign of the other shrimp yet. I'll have to get some more this week and see what happens I think.

Could be either one, really. If it wasn't biten at all, I'd say it just died.

I would expect tio see some damage to the shrimp if the DPs killed it.

My DPs went for the legs more then the body till the shrimp died. After it was an easy meal they ate the body.

Coexistence between DPs and shrimp is completely unpredictable. It seems to be a coin toss. If you are lucky, the DPs ignore the shrimp. If you are not they are lunch.

If my DPs leave amano shrimp alone is that a good indicator of how they would treat other species?

I've also thought about cherry shrimp...

Smaller the shrimp the more prone for Puffs to mistake them for food. So unless you get large cherries I wouldn't take the risk.
