Can anyone give me some info on the Leopard Puffer? I can't find a lot on the internet. Thanks!

In Dr. Eberts book, Leopard Puffer is a common name for Tetraodon schoutedeni, a freshwater Puffer from Africa.

He boldly states that it has been regularly availiable for degades,
but I for one has never seen one or heard about someone actually owning a specimen (except Dr. Ebert...

).

What little info he can offer is:
A smallish (max size 9 cm) and relativly peaceful puffer.
Creates semi-havoc with plants, (as do several other puffers), including biting holes in them.
Probably hunting for snails would be my guess.
Few problems with fin-nipping in this species.
That's it...

It looks a lot like GSP, (Tetraodon nigroviridis), but is strictly a freshwater species.

I highly doubt that your "leopard" puffer is a T schoutedeni. It is extremely rare to find this fish available.

Yes -- I'm aware that here in the United States, a very large chain of pet shops/aquariums by the name of "Petco" calls GSPs "Leopard Puffers."

Well, that probably explains it! I saw it at Petco. They usually do have GSP's, but these didn't look like them. These said "leopard puffer" and were not the bright green that the GSP usually seem to be. They were more of a brownish over some spots. They looked very sad and undernourished! It's amazing that I didn't leave with both of them....

Woland - if it cheers you at all, all the reports I have seen on the "true" Spotted Congo have been from Europe, but I have no way of knowing if they were real, or GSPs in FW.

And less-than-happy GSPs are not green, but the "cap" should still show green unless the fish is nearly black.

There was a bit of green at the very top. Is this (possible) discoloration an unhappiness issue or a true health problem?

Possibly both.Was the puffer in FW or BW?

I work at a Petco in Texas and we have three of these green spotted puffers they call Leopard Puffers. We are only allowed to order two different puffers: the figure 8's and the Leopards. (It's funny the policies the bigwigs make. Apparently, they made an agreement with our suppliers that they can't send us any other color parrot cichlid than the orange ones. Is that stupid or what?)
Of the three we have one has a slight green irridensence to him, the other two are just yellow. I am currently cycling in a tank for the greenish one because he has stolen my heart. He seems to have the most personality and has become the dominant out of the three. No customers ever pay any attention to them so I'm not worried that he'll sell before I'm ready for him. I add marine salt to their tank and scrape baby snails from other tanks to feed them. They eat very hardily and always seem plump and happy.
