Questions regarding pufferfish toxin

Post by Epoe »

I’ve been looking to get a fahaka and have been doing my research before making any purchases. Only thing that gives me pause is the whole toxin thing. My understanding from what I’ve found online is that the toxin can be found mainly in organs and sometimes in their skin (fw more so than sw) however it isn’t secreted.

So there are no toxins in the water? If water somehow splashed into my mouth that would be no more of an issue than any other fish water?

If I were to pet the puffer and forget to wash my hands and then have something to eat, is there any risk in this scenario?

Probably over thinking it but curious in each scenario if there would be any risk specifically concerning their toxin.

You would have to eat the puffer to die. Any other scenario would result in 0 problems.

The toxin cannot make its way in through cuts on hands either? Sorry if this is obvious, just want to confirm. Thank you for answering my questions!

Curious also, is the toxin even in their skin? I have seen conflicting answers on if it is just organs or in their skin as well.
