50 gallon shallow - ideas?

Post by phren0logy »

Hi, I was browsing at Ye Olde Local Fish Store, and I got a great deal on a UNS 90u stand, which I plan to pair with the 90s shallow tank (about 48 gallons). The stand will also hold the taller 90U, which is more like 68 gallons, but I really like the shallow tank dimensions, and I'm guessing the depth won't make a whole lot of difference for what I have in mind.

I was originally shopping for a smaller tank to hold a potato / Congo / murius puffer. This size seems pretty big for one amigo. Congo Spotted Puffers are very cool, and there would be room for more than one - but that's a load of money, especially for someone new to puffers. I was thinking freshwater, but lightly brackish isn't out of the question.

Anyway, if you were to set up a 50 gallon shallow tank, what would you put in it? Suggestions much appreciated!

UNS 90S dimensions:
Length: 35.43"
Width: 22.05"
Height: 14.17"

A single GSP, Ceylon, or Humpback. 3 Spotted Congo puffers (if you can afford them). A herd of dwarf puffers.

I am really eyeing those Spotted Congo Puffers. My big concern is adding them one at a time, based on both compatibility and how reliably they can be sexed. I'll do some more reading. Thanks!

Further suggestions also welcomed.

That certainly seems ideal, but I can’t really find anywhere to buy them as male/female or big enough to reliably sex them. I’ll work on it.

Also, do people generally have issues with aggression or being bitten when cleaning tanks with Congo Spotted puffers?

No, they are one of the nicer species.

Thanks for all the replies. I think I have a line on a pair of them I'll put in there.

3 or more would be better & diffuse the dominant one picking on the weaker one.
The T. schoutedeni is only loosely gregarious and they should be housed either individually or kept in groups comprising of at least 6 individuals to disperse aggression among conspecifics.
Some aquarists enjoy success keeping groups consisting of smaller numbers, but it is important to recognize that these fish are very much individualists and behavior may change over time; especially when they reach sexual maturity.
The best minimum male to female ratio is believed to be 2 females to every male.
