Evidently my fish like to bite the hand that feeds them x.x

Post by hadla »

I try to give Roger a snail and I guess I scared him cause he punched my nail, didn't hurt but it shocked me! Then I'm trying to give the big puffs some snails and one decided to bite the same finger that Roger hit! So now I'm waiting for the liquid bandage to harden on the puffer bite and typing this with my left hand... *sigh* at least it's nice to know that Roger can't really hurt me yet if he decides to attack my hand :/

Hand-feeding puffers directly makes you qualified for the Darwin Awards. Use forceps, chopsticks, less-than-sharp skewers, threads without knots, etc. Teaching carnivores to associate human fingers with food is not very bright. Just the risk of Mycobacterium marinum infection alone should keep anyone from doing that, but with puffer's sharp and strong incisors, the risk of bite damage itself is absurdly high.

NIMFT, not ever.

You want to see the pic of my puffer-mauled finger AGAIN? Seriously, use tongs, Piggy bit a huge chunk out of my finger, and left a neat V shaped notch in my fingernail.

Took over a month to heal.

Lol I'm not going to put my hand in to give them snails anymore. I'll just drop them in and I use a stainless steel skewer that I bent to hang worms on for them

You get nasty skin flaps from large puffer bites, if you are lucky. If you are unlucky you loose a finger.
It's amazing how easy maintenance is. If done regularly and thoroughly

Never lost a piece of my finger yet, though I've never been inclined to hand feed. I did shave off a nice chunk today though when my water change tub snapped at the edge while carrying it and carved a hunk out of my finger :/, ouch! Oh the dangers of fishkeeping lol...

Oh and Bertie, nice puffer, seems like a very low-maintenance species.

I have been fortunate to not have my hands be seen as a snack. However, I have sliced my hand pretty bad on the plastic rim while cleaning one of my tanks. That was awful.

And why do you think pufferghoti gets to tidy up tanks while I feed the puffers at the other end??

TBH..I have never had a problem so far with one of the larger puffer species and biting..My one and only bite was from an orange banded/peacock puffer and that hurt enough for me!
