Hey everyone, Im new to the forum!
I can't determine whether my red eye puffer is C.irrubesco or C.lorteti ??
The information online is misleading, so I figured I should ask the pros.
Here is a video of my puffer swimming around; http://youtu.be/qX-FPWUuwnk
I am also unsure if its male or female??
It has a red stripe on its belly, if that helps..
Any help is appreciated!

Very healthy, good-looking fish you have there! Have you checked our Pufferpedia, under the Learn tab?

Welcome to the forum
It's amazing how easy maintenance is. If done regularly and thoroughly
Re: Help identifying Red eye puffer!
Thank you, and I'll give it a look right now
Re: Help identifying Red eye puffer!
Ok, well after comparing it to the pictures on pufferpedia, I believe its a female C.irrubesco!
However, what throws me off is the fact that my puffer has a red line on its belly.. which I read that the males are supposed to have.. and also looks like it has blue eyes sometimes.. which I also read is a trait that the males possess..
Any thoughts?

The male has a red stripe on his belly
Re: Help identifying Red eye puffer!
Maybe a juvenile male? An adult one should look different, bigger, more boxy. She looks like mine, as far as I can tell (the video is quite small, and the belly not so visible. I have a female irrubesco too, or so I think, the black marking on her belly are less and less visible, I may end up with a male toopuffo wrote:Ok, well after comparing it to the pictures on pufferpedia, I believe its a female C.irrubesco!

The male I saw in the tank when I buy mine looked very different though, and much bigger than the my female, or any female I saw since...but maybe it was mature, and juvenile are less characteristic...

May I ask where you bought it from?
Re: Help identifying Red eye puffer!
Yeah gkai, I am hoping that its a male as I just bought what I hope is a juvenile female!
and AquaMike, I bought it from a Big Als aquarium .. they always get loads of different puffers in stock, but I'm not sure if they ship fish out or sell online
