Puffer ID?

Post by Jenny »

Hello, I'm new here but not that new to puffers.
Today I bought a new puffer. It was sold as Monotrete abei but I think it looks more like a leiurus.
It is about 6cm. The profile pic is most accurate in coloring.

But T.turgidus doesn't seem to have the pattern of a flower on its sides. And T.turgidus have rounder spots I think.

If it's any help, Piggy and Spuddy look completely different, even though they're both Baileyii. Piggy is lighter and more frayed round the edges, and he has smaller eyes.

It not a turgidus. It's a fangs. Short snout + very distinct eye spot different in size when compared to the other spots.

Hmm, perhaps it is a fangs. I didn't notice earlier that they got an eyespot.
Are yours very aggressive ? Mine is very mild tempered. I keep it with some endler, kuhli and corydoras. It doesn't even look twise at fry.

It can be red or black according to corvus. But even though they look black mine has a red coloration when his emotion changes. However color is not really needed for this id. The eyespot is very distinct which is not like a turgidus.

Corvus..

"Short snout (< about 2.5 diameters of the eye) + clear target spot (can be red or another color, but must be obvious) = M. cochinchinensis"

I wouldn't recommend tankmates, it's just too much of a risk. They are fish eaters.

Mine is quite friendly for a lurker though. Always at the glass to meet us...then stare at us...then stalk us....then beg us. He only eats live earth worms :)

I think it is a M. leiurus. From the pictures the snout looks long enough. It looks much longer than the snout out the puffer of purplecandle.

For the differences of M. cochinchinensis and M. turgidus purplecandle is absolutely right. This is in my opinion definitely no M. turgidus. And M. cochinchinensis does not always have a red spot.

How come M.leiurus isn't among the puffers in pufferpedia?

We're can I find these neat descriptions Purplecandle quoted from earlier?

Well, at least it is good to know everyone so far doesn't think it's an M.abei.
How to say this to my LPS. This wouldn't be the first time he is a bit off. :poke:

If she has a leirus, that's too cool! :hyper:

The snout is longer than mine, I just didn't think it was was long enough to be anything other than fangs. Maybe a better Pic? I'd like to see a better snout pic just for my curiosity.

I think many fangs have that red spot, but usually it appears solid black. When it is red It's almost like a cat eye at night, like a sheen, or something. Mine's spot will turn red if he's woken up, startled, temp change or ticked off.

To the op....fangs or leirus, you've got a great find there! :D

Atleast it is good to know she isn't an abei.

I'll take another pic of her when she wakes up.
Another thing, she got a mark on her back. It looks like a arrowhead. Might that be a clue to the species? I've seen that mark often when googling M.leiurus.

Why doesn't leiurus show up at pufferpedia? Or perhaps it didn't look properly.
