I own a 26gallons tank with one F8 puffer... We're having a situation in Quebec, Canada with ice storms, we've received icy rain, roughly ¾" thick on branches I've seen... Villages to the south of my home and to the east had power outrage for a few days now and are starting to be hooked up... I've been lucky, power has cut often but never exceeding 30seconds... But lost internet for 4days, better that than power I think...
But that reminded me that in 1998 we've loss power for 10 days and some of my friends in other towns had lost it for 23+days... What would happen to the fish??? How long could it go without reoxygenizing (is this even a word???) the water??? I can have access to a generator, but could have to share if my father happens to need it too...
Any alternative possible??? Like mixing the water by repouring it in itself a few times for a certain amount a time to keep it "ok" for some other period of time??? How to test oxygen in water??? I'd hate to see the fish die because power went out for a long period of time... It stopped raining for 1½day now and not calling anymore, so unless a branch would break on wires we should be in the clear!!!

I did that all night with Hubby for 9 tanks. We bought a generator after that one...
There are smaller battery backup pumps.

You are getting sleepy... you only hear the sound of my voice... you must do water changes... water changes... water changes... water changes...

I've lost power before in the winter and wrapped the tanks with comforters...Then, because I have natural gas and city water, I filled 3-4 2ltr soda bottles with hot tap water and placed them together alongside the front glass, under the comforters. Worked quite well...Just keep roatating the bottles out.

without a generator - all of the above
with a generator - fish are happy, all problems solved including house lighting & heating, TV, stereo, cooking, life is good!

Re: What happens when power goes out???
we were lucky enough to miss that part of the storm being north of Montreal. Last year we were out of power for 40ish hours and bought a small generator to run our tanks. puffer ghoti and I traded 4 hour night shifts to keep the gen running. We are hoping to buy a bigger generator so we can run more tanks without switching them out every couple of hours as well as being able to provide some hot food/drinks. We have 2 wood burning fires so that helped keep temps up in the house.
