DIY sump + Protein skimmer

Post by BedScien »

I'm planning to build a sump and simple protein skimmer and have a few questions

Are cleaned plastic drinks bottles safe for in aquarium systems?

Best type of flexible clear piping and place to get it cheap?

Plastic bottles are fine and you can buy all different sized clear tubing from your lfs or very cheaply on ebay. Where are you getting the info on how to build them?

Thanks :).

Watched a bunch of videos and looked at some diagrams and am improvising based on them :)

The sump will be as simple - I have a 50 l tank and can use the powerhead from a filter as the intake and a stronger spare pump I have for an exit as the sump will be under my tank.

The protein skimmer, I'm thinking of using a bottle as the reaction chamber and getting and air pump and stone for the bubbles. I might double the intake of the sump as the intake for the protein skimmer so all the water passes through it and let gravity power the exit so I avoid buying another pump.

But there's really a billion ways of doing it so I might end up doing it completely different.
