Water change/salinity increase!

Post by Cinder »

It's been a week since Hobart II came to live with me. Today I did about a 40% water change, and increased the salinity from .006 to .008. Almost immediately, Hobart became more active, not in a stressed out way, but in a happy way. His belly is still bright white, his "headspot" became an even brighter shade of yellow/green, and he is now begging for food. I imagine that because he's happy, the endeavor was a success.

You tank looks amazing, great job. And your little guy is a so handsome. Did you treat for worms? I think I'm going to treat mine just in case.

Thank you for the compliments. :D Hobart II is so much healthier and happier than Hobart I (who I bought from Walmart and had suffered a back injury). I'm still waiting for my Easter Island decoration to complete (?) the tank.
No, I didn't treat for worms. I don't want to if I don't need to, and I'm not 100% sure that I need to. I am fortunate (or Hobart is fortunate) that I am breeding ramshorn snails so that I have a constant supply of healthy gut loaded food for my puffer.

Be sure to monitor the ammonia/nitrite/nitrate closely through the transition from FW to SW bacteria, which can start with your next increase in specific gravity.

Thank you for the advice! I'll be sure to do that. :)

Yes he looks great. I thought you had treated him for worms. In that case I agree with you, I don't think you have to.

I drove 1 hour (50 miles) each way to get Hobart. A little "Mom & Pop" type LFS that's been around for AGES in Fort Wayne, IN. (I remember going there when I was about 10 or 11...... wow, that was so long ago!) Probably the best LFS in the city, and prices that are very reasonable. The owner has a Fahaka there that is easily 5 inches. He's had "her" since she was about 2 inches, and she is one BEAUTIFUL fish. {sigh}.............. I think Hobart is very healthy and so are the other puffers they had. BUT, Hobart swam up to the glass when I was trying to choose a puffer, and captured my heart with what I thought at the time was a wink. Now I know better, but still.......
