My GSP puffer jumped out of my tank today, luckily I got off work early today, so I was sitting only a feet feet away when it happened. On a normal day, it would not of ended so well. I have a glass top with a gap for the HOB skimmer and some cords for the power heads. I have read that puffers do jump, but this gap is only 3-4 inches, so I thought it would be ok. He sat out of the water for a few minutes because he landed behind the tank, which made it difficult to get to.
So, my questions is what causes puffers to jump? I did a 8 gallon water change yesterday, and I have added a leather coral. I do weekly water changes (5-10 gallons each time), the past month have been using red sea coral pro salt. The previous times have been instant ocean salt. I keep my salt levels between 1.025-1.027
Right now, he is going crazy, window surfing non stop. I put a towel over the side of the tank that gets the most traffic and turned the tank light off.

Cover the gap straight away. It could be stress from you putting something new in his home
It's amazing how easy maintenance is. If done regularly and thoroughly

I covered the gap as soon as I put him back in.bertie 83 wrote:Cover the gap straight away. It could be stress from you putting something new in his home
I have now noticed some white spots on his back. I have tried to take a picture, I hope it is noticeable.
Is this itch that I am seeing?
He did rub up against some rough wood when trying to pick him up off the ground, so I'm not sure if that is the cause of the spots.

I am gonna go out on a limb and say that it is healing skin tissue from abrasions sustained from the incident. It is similar to scabs on our own skin.

Add Melafix to his tank, to promote healing. What SG is he at?

I think you missed this part of the post, PP
And I do think that is a tad bit high. Bring it down to 1.023-1.025.sbc580 wrote:I keep my salt levels between 1.025-1.027

Use the Marine Melafix then. That's a HUGE waste of $alt!
