Fahaka Exercise?

Post by Tripp »

Ok so we have to Fahaka puffers at the moment..
The little guy we rescued and then Dexter the monster lol.

Right now Dexter is getting fat because we have been feeding him crab meat about every other day.
How can I get him to swim more to burn off the unwanted weight?

Fish Treadmill?
Fish Water Aerobics?

lol
I am thinking about just feeding him snails and shelled claims to make him work for his food.

Yep make him hunt, leave more time between feeds and a powerhead for good flow will help with exercise
It's amazing how easy maintenance is. If done regularly and thoroughly

If you have read some of his other posts viewtopic.php?f=56&t=32949, you would remember he has them in different tanks....

Nope we are searching for a new tank for our original fahaka Dexter..
He is moving to either a 150-180 or a 210 depending on what used tank I can find.

The rescued one is going to be moving the 75g. When he grows out of it I will build a custom tank for both to be housed in.

I cant find a tank I like now that has the length I want.

To give Fahaka puffers more exercise:

1. Provide the largest appropriate tank for them. Preferably provide that tank from QT forward, regardless of fish's current size. I would use 180 US gallons minimum.
2. Set up a aquascpe which is visually complex, so you add food in different locations and they will need to check the whole tank routinely.
3. Set for increased current along one of the 6-foot sides so that they can play/swim against a relatively strong current. Also have "sheltered areas" elsewhere in the tank for resting/sleeping.
4. Fahaka tanks need stable secure rockwork. Some of these fish are srtong diggers. All heavy decor need to really stable such that it cannot be undermined to topple against the sides or bottom.
