wanting a puffer fish? but wants more info first?

Post by macca »

hi guys i am sorry if this is a re-post? but i am kinda knew at this forum thing. i live in western Australia and am trying to find out as much info as i can on freshwater (brackish) puffer fish?
i am buying them from a pet store near were i live but i am unable to get a signification name so finding out info is proving to be hard? i was wondering if you guys could help me/correct me?

i was wondering from the study i have done so far. i found that the water temp likes to be around 24-26c (76-78f)?

i also found the ph for the tank should be 7.5-8.0?

i am looking at having two small puffers in a 160L tank (42 gallons) i think it will be ok for just them two fish seens as in the shop they are in a tank thats mybe 20L?

from my study/looking a pics online it looks like a torquigener glaber? are this australinan fish or am i way off base? if you guys could help it would be grate. i look forward to your help and i will post pics when i get the fish at the end of the week once my tank has cycled through?

oh one other thing i have a brother that has a full marine tank and he recons i should take the carbon filters out? thoughts?

thanks aging and really look forward to your help.

The puffer you mention is an Aussie, but we need a picture for ID, they are easily confused with other freshwater species.

Hard to give info without proper ID.

Welcome to the forum!

the first two results of a "google" search of "torquigener glaber":

2) viewtopic.php?f=6&t=12863

It does look like a sap but the fully silver underside is making me question that. I am not too sure, this is one for Corvus
It's amazing how easy maintenance is. If done regularly and thoroughly

It is NOT a SAP

It is a Marilyna darwinii, an Aussie.

Here is a corvus ID.

I am always right...just kidding! :roflmfao:

You ever notice...when people from Australia come here, they always have some sort of Australian puffer? They rarely come on with green spots or freshwater puffers. I wonder if shipping from places like Singapore or South America is too far away from Australia or something?

Ok so its a marilyna darwinii. that sounds a bit closer to home. well if that's a aussie then it must be that. :-) thanks for the link i will have a read.

thanks again pc and bertie you guys are a grate source of info hay.

pc yer that might be true but i think that's because of how strict our quarantine laws are. i would love to get a green spotted puffer i think they look amazing.
for example i live in wa and i have a reptile license but that only lets me keep reptiles that are from west Australia. for some silly reason i cant own a green tree snake because they are not common over hear but they are in the east states like syd and qld. so i think that's why you find most aussies speaking about aussie fish hay. :-( its a shame cos there are some really cool ones out there hay.

i will post a pic of my tank with my puffers in it soon i am just waiting on the tank to finish cycling through. say can you point me in the way of info about over-filtration?

Given how much closer Singapore is to Oz than US...I'm doubting that statement...

However fiscally there maybe better reasons to transport to US/Canada due to the fact that US/Canada has a combined population of close to 350 mill..( approx 310 m US and 33 Canada) than to Oz pop approx 30 mill..
A kiss on the hand may be quite continental

ok cool so its a marilyna so what do you guys think the best tank set up is in regards to the ph and how much salt i put in the tank?

my tests so far are ph is around 7.4-7.6ph and 0 ammonia, 0 nitrate, 0 nitrite
as for the salinity of the water is still fresh atm but i am slowly introducing salt over the next few days to slowly increase the salinity.
and the temp is set around the 25-26c.

dose all that sound about right?
