Spider Eye Toby Puffer (Canthigaster amboinensis)

Post by *GSP*Fan* »

I remember reading, or more so seeing photos of this puffer, when I was looking into the different toby puffers for my tank. I hadn't ever seen one listed for sale before and am thinking they aren't offered often? I can't say I've tried hard to look before but I just came across one on Live Aquaria in Divers Den and it just got me thinking. Now I do remember seeing a photo in an article but it was focusing on two other toby puffers and had just briefly mentioned this puffer and had a photo attached pointing out its markings and such. I would assume its care would be the same as other tobys but again hadn't looked into this, just now saw him/her listed on Divers Den.

Now I've got my 60g currently with my Solandri and a few tankmates but have the 90g I will be switching everything over to. I had thought about possibly trying another toby puffer but had not looked into that yet, I had intended to ask here when/if it came up before doing so. I'm not sure if two tobys can work in a tank; if they're likely to get along, very likely to fight, etc. I do know it will depend on the individual puffer.

Anyway, after seeing this puffer on Divers Den ( I very much like WYSIWYG, so a plus) I thought I'd ask about the puffer in general and if it would be too risky to add another toby to my tank. Just since it isn't a puffer I have seen listed or in stock anywhere kinda thought he/she could be a nice addition that isn't quite as common, which I like. If its not a good idea/too risky, not a big deal. Again, just thought I'd ask. Basically curious about the puffer in general as its not one I've seen much on at all.

Also, if it was to even make a difference, the listed size of the puffer in the link would be around the size of my current puffer.

Here he/she is.

its risky, always will ve risky even if ecerything looks fine for months or years.

worst case scenario, you get one dead puffer or you rehome one of them.

easier to give advice rather than taking your own.
Kind regards,

I have never had any issues keeping different species of tobys together, even in my 50g.

Thanks for all of the responses.

I know it always comes down the the personality of the individual puffer but it just seemed that the tobys weren't quite as aggressive as others and that I had read over something mentioning two tobys being kept together.

My current puffer hasn't shown any aggression to its tankmates, or corals, though they're obviously isn't any other puffers yet. I would hope two could coexist in the same tank but if it came down to it I would have another tank I could set up if I needed to separate the two.

We're they added together or at separate times?

I'm not sure exactly when I'll get things situated with finally getting the 90g up and running. It mainly comes down to having the time and help. I do still have to run to Lowes to finish the plumbing in the overflow and then let it run but there isn't anything major stopping me from setting it up.

If I was to buy the puffer listed on Divers Den before it was sold do you think it could be an issue adding him/her to my 60g if the 90g wasn't up by the time he/she arrived? I was kinda surprised to see that puffer still listed. I would like to have him as I like his/her different colors/patterns but don't want to rush into it if the situation with the switching of the tanks could pose problems in any way (with adding the new puffer to the 60g for a short while, that sort of thing).

Thank you.

He is still available I'm just still trying to decide though I know there would be a chance he may still not be available if I take too long to think on this.

Any issues with the two puffers getting along worries me and also risking it with another fish that may very well mess with the corals. I know I've been lucky so far with the one. He is a little different than the usual toby puffer I've seen and well..he's a puffer...

It's a tricky situation, but if the cons potentially outweigh the delight of owning such a nice fish sometimes you gotta let them pass by. Like you said it's not just the potential for aggression between the tobies but you have some real nice corals that could well be in harms way. It's risk assessment and only you can decide if you are willing to take the chance.
It's amazing how easy maintenance is. If done regularly and thoroughly
