I'd lower that sand bed to < 1" or it's gonna be a ton more work to keep up.

+1!
and when you do lower the sand bed, it will make the rocks less stable - be careful

I'm getting plants today. I just don't know if I should buy fake or live. I know live plants will probably look better and be more beneficial but are they hard to maintain?

What kind of plants also. I will be buying from petsmart

Buy live and the lowest maintenance once you can, I have had loads of easy ones for along time now they need no care just pull the odd dead leaf off, live plants or a mix I'd say helps your water.

I would look online if your local fish store does not have choice and or knowledge. my Petsmart has poor grades in both. Look for a fish specific shop
