you want a good skimmer, which is big and bulky. sump required now. a hob refugium might not function very well for your large system and all hob skimmers not good enough.

Not necessarily. Depends on his plans for stocking & how often/how much, he's willing to do WC.

Stocking will be very light, no mass waste producers or large fish. As for water changes I cannot get enough of those lol, since running down tanks I feel a bit lost lol, maybe 30% weekly? Maybe more lol

It's real cold here heaters are essential lol. Infanct my tank warms my front room to a degree.

Typo lmao. Will be using4x t5 tubes. Run a mix of tubes perhaps?

Absolutely a mix. You're gonna need way more than 4 bulbs over a tank that size to support corals. And T5s do warm up the water. I have a fan under the canopy & another over the sump.

Would a cfl be any better? Or is metal halide the way to go? I would have to do a fair bit of modifying to fit more than 4 bulbs in the hood

I have 6 T5s & a strip of moonlights in my canopy over the 90g. Does each bulb have an individual reflector?

If it's just a hood, can you build a canopy & use those fixtures for it, plus some more? Like I said, you're gonna need WAY more light for a reef.

Many of my fellow reefers who moved to LEDs are moving back to their MH & T5s. Glad I never went that route.

LEDs are not even a consideration tbh. I have 4x t5 fittings so only need to purchase another pair with bulbs so not so bad.

I like to stick to what I know tbh, I have veered away twice before and got bitten hard. Thanks for the input though. My plans have changed slightly. Will prob use my 5 foot bow front and move my loaches on to new homes. I am keeping an eye out for a drilled tank too and will keep you all informed. Also if anyone happens to spot l/r for sale in the uk shout me lol (second hand as getting all new would set me back around £1000 if I stick to the 140 kgs from a Lfs)
