Freshwater Puffer type unknown, help?
Freshwater Puffer type unknown, help?
Anyone know what kind of freshwater puffer this is? Just bought him cheap from someone who wanted to get rid of him fast! No luck in finding out what kind he is from the fish stores around here, thanks!

That is either a gsp or a Ceylon defo not freshwater hence the black belly
It's amazing how easy maintenance is. If done regularly and thoroughly
Re: Freshwater Puffer type unknown, help?
he was in a freshwater tank at the fish store and was brought in with a pair. He was the only one left, sold for 15.99 and they said just to run a little bit of salt. are you sure he's not brackish?
Re: Freshwater Puffer type unknown, help?
I have a figure 8 and him in the tank, along with 2 eels. I run salt right now, but not alot. Just want to make sure that i'm taking care of him correctly.

He is high brackish/ marine. Marine will save you lots of money long term. Most Lfs are full of totally wrong info, this is the case here

Re: Freshwater Puffer type unknown, help?
he looks like a ceylon. will he be okay in the freshwater ran with salt? I have done salt before and really only have time for a freshwater. that is what my tank is right now.

Re: Freshwater Puffer type unknown, help?
You need to separate him and the f8 fast before you have 2 dead puffers. Plus they require totally different water. What sg is your tank at? How big is the tank?

Re: Freshwater Puffer type unknown, help?
No good for either puffer I'm afraid. If you can't do two separate very different tanks I would return them both

Re: Freshwater Puffer type unknown, help?
Why would they not be able to be in the same tank? My tank is a 40 breeder.

Re: Freshwater Puffer type unknown, help?
The 40 breeder would be good for the Ceylon alone with no other fish. They will fight if kept together, plus they have different water requirements. The f8 needs sg 1.003-1.005, the Ceylon I believe 1.012++

Re: Freshwater Puffer type unknown, help?
I'm running it at a low salinity, just using rock salt. I don't know the sg.

Re: Freshwater Puffer type unknown, help?
That's not the correct salt to make brackish/ marine water. You should be using a marine mix

Re: Freshwater Puffer type unknown, help?
the fish store I've gone to for 6 years suggested the rock salt, so I just used what they suggested. This is my first time doing a brackish aquarium. I'm used to discus and stingray.

Re: Freshwater Puffer type unknown, help?
Once you get into it you will learn not to listen to your Lfs. Pretty much all of them are full of crap and are just after your hard earned money. They don't care if fish live or die as long as you part with your cash
