In the docs, I've read that the SG for my F8 puffer is supposed to be 1.005 to 1.008; however, one of the LFS's in my area has their brackish tank at 1.012, and they say that it's fine to have F8's in it.
So, who's right here? The LFS has tons of saltwater fish, and they definitely seem to know what they are talking about as well.
My current F8 is in freshwater (got him at a different LFS), and I have to slowly drip his SG up, so I need to know where I should stop, since I probably won't get any more F8's from the store that was keeping them in Fresh Water.

Well, here's the thing. F-8's will do brilliantly in low end brackish water - 1.005 to 1.008 or so. You could probably go higher - but why do so? At an SG of 1.005 you will be keeping the puffer quite happy and using much less salt than would be required to keep a higher SG.
So, its cheaper for you to keep your F-8 at the lower SG, in terms of cost of salt...and based on RTR's experience with keeping F-8's over many many years - the ideal SG is 1.005-1.008.

Please, no matter how much you think a LFS knows, don't believe their overall "knowledge" of fish over our knowledge of puffers.
Are you dripping the tank s.g. up or the fish up to put in an already cycled BW tank?
If you are raising the tank, raise it at the most .002/ week with each of your weekly water changes. Any faster and you are killing the bacteria in the tank. in order to not have to cycle the tank over again, go very slow so the FW bacteria can be replaced by the SW bacteria.
If you are raising just the fish's S.G., which I now you can do with a GSP, not sure of the Fig 8's, it is very stressful on the fish and is not the optimum way to do it. However if you must, go very slow max .001/ hr and turn the lights off the reduce stress.

This is the only fish store around me that I know of at the moment that actually keeps their puffers in brackish water...everyone else seems to keep them in fresh water.
Either way, whenever I decide to get more puffers, they're going to have to be salt-dripped in a separate tank for a few weeks regardless...but they have to be quarantines anyway, so I guess it's not a big deal.
BTW, I've had my F8 in the office for about 2 weeks now, and he's quite active, and seems to be doing well. Can't wait to see how he's going to react when I move him to a tank 4X the size he's in now.
