I know they don't quite equally compare, but a bigger water column isn't only good for swimming and entertainment, but also better to keep water params in check.

Ofcourse it can be done, whether or not this is animal cruelty however, that I cannot answer . I have seen F8s in reef aquaria, and they show no visual signs of discomfort that I can see. It is near impossible to find accounts of people that keep them long term though. I have only found one account that said he kept one for 12 year.

I am wondering if RTR has some more insight into what would happen to F8s in marine water given his research, for the benefit of this thread and out of personal curiosity. As a simple No and it's not optimal are personally not good enough answers as this is something that is an often returning question especially on reef fora.

It's almost the same as asking if you can survive in the atmosphere of Mars. You may be able to breathe in it somewhat, but one cannot say how long you can survive doing so.
