Refinished my tank stand

Post by boosted23 »

I bought my 150 gallon tank off of craigslist here in arizona. When i picked it up, it looked like the people let a child paint it. needless to say it was an awful color.. I couldnt handle the look of it nor did it match my furninture. Well, I went to home depot and picked up paint stripper, after wash for cleaning the wood after stripping, sandpaper, varnish, polyeurathane coating. It took me about 12 hours to complete the task since i did it all by hand, no orbital sanders. I thought it came out ok.

When i bought it

That looks just like the fish tank I had!

2'x3'x4' 150 Gallon Tank? :D I had that exact same stand. I totally regret selling it but I could not take it with me when I moved.

Great job! I did the same thing. Bought a ugly stand at a thrift store for $12 and used a sander to get off all the old finish, and stained mine the same dark color you did. Love that color. Impressed you did it by hand. Lots of work into that :)

Thank you all for the compliments. the 6 hours or so of sanding by hand sucked but the end result was worth it. sgtmeyers, yes that is the tank i have. i cant wait to fill it and get this puppy running. i repainted the mouldings on the tank black. just bought prime, water test kit, python system, co2 tank, and tank heaters. just waiting for them to arrive. gotta get more substrate and it will be show time. i will take better pics with my nikon d3100 and post them.

i am gonna just update this thread with my transformation of my tank. I got macro nutrients from greenleafaquariums.com and seachem flourish for my micros. since the last week or so of dosing, my plants have taken off like a mother!!!! they are growing at an alarming rate. In this process i have also gained quite a bit of brown and hair algae along with white algae. I went to petco and got 2 zebra and 2 tiger nerite snails to control this algae. they are doing a wonderful job of vacuuming my algae up. Here are some pics of its progress from beginning to now. plans now are to go to my local fish store and pic up some swords and others to add some more and rearrange the rotallas' to the left side in the next few weeks after they grow more.

I also seen on another forum a piece of driftwood that is an old bonsai tree and they fused wooden planks on the branches so you can add moss to have it grow and look like an underwater bonsai tree. i am on the quest of locating one of these pieces.

i also cant wait for my little buddy to get better so he can return to his kingdom i have made for him.
