What type of filter is it? What is the maximum flow of it?
It's amazing how easy maintenance is. If done regularly and thoroughly

I have a filter meant for 70g on my 20g. Stick with the Aquaclear brand.

I'd wait. There's no rush, you're going to have to run both filters at the same time anyways until the new one has a bacterial colony established in it. I agree with PP, of all the HOB filters, aquaclear brand seems to be the best. I had a marineland HOB on my piranha tank before and didn't much care for it. Aquaclear has 50 and 70 gallon models, both of which are fairly affordable and would work nicely. You can get them under $50 from ebay/amazon if your lfs doesn't have them, or is like mine and overcharges for them. Marineland with cartridges suck, replacing them kills your bacteria, with aquaclear, you just rinse the reusable sponge in tank water and presto!, clean filter media. Being reusable makes it much less expensive too.

If you are stuck with that filter (which have good water flow, so they are not completely useless) you can do what I have done and cheat by buying and modifying aquaclear media and cutting it to fit your cartridge filter. Get the sponges and filter floss media which are ideal for this application.
