Puffer newbie (kinda)

Post by Joanstone »

Hi all- thought I'd introduce myself as recently found this forum and recently acquired my first freshwater puffer. I've had saltwater puffers in the past, but last spring switched back to freshwater aquariums completely. I have a 120 gallon discus tank, a 220 mixed with loaches, SA dwarf cichlids, etc and various small aquariums with bettas, shrimp, guppies. I am in the process of setting up a 75 gallon paludarium which I think will ultimately house my new puffer. He/she is in a 30 gallon QT tank for now. The puffer I got was sold to me as a C. Borneensis. The patterning looks a little different to me than some of the photos I've seen (seems like a more extensive pattern), but I will assume that's what he/she is. With a white underside, do I assume it's a female? So far she is happy to scarf down frozen bloodworms, live white worms, live red wriggler worms and suck snails out of their shells. Since she doesn't crunch snails, should I worry about overgrown teeth? Seems like I saw where someone on here said that's what their's does and it was ok. I'd love to get another-I imagine it's a risk? If I try another one should I try for the same sex or the opposite?

Thanks for all the info I've gotten from this forum so far, sorry for my wordiness!

Welcome to the forum.

Is there anyway you could get a picture? Knowing what puffer you have is very important. Most petstores mislable puffers.

I will try to put up a photo, but I don't know if I can from an iPad and that's all I have. Does anyone know if/how I can do that. My puffer was ordered through my LFS from the cichlid exchange. They have a photo on aquabid under wetspot (their retail componant) but I don't really think he looks like the photo.

I think I was successful, had to get my husband and his laptop involved. The photos aren't great, sorry but hope you can ID from them. He is normally out begging/watching me, but he sure didn't like my ipad.

It's just a small amount of Fluval plant Stratum that ended up in that tank. Any input as to whether or not he's a he or a she? Or if he/she is really a borneensis?
