Questions about Red Eyed Puffers

Post by Lukedt95 »

So I'll be getting a Red Eyed Puffer, probably tomorrow, I think i'll be getting a Carinotetraodon irrubesco, but I have a few questions about the Red Eyed species in general.

I've heard they don't have nearly as many problems with their teeth as other puffers do, is this true?

What should I feed a baby one?

How big do they get? (Average)

Does their size differ from females and males?

How do you find out it's gender?

Thanks in advance.

I had a Lorteti red eye puffer

Most puffers need crunchy diet, but if you compere red eye to like SAP then yeah, teeth growth is much much slower.

If you get a baby puffer simple bloodworms will be OK

I think they get to 2 inchis

I have a red eyed M. Turgidus. I haven't fed any snails or hard-shelled food for almost 1 year. His teeth is short everyday I see him. I think the same might apply to the other red-eyed species. Have any of you seen overgrown teeth for any red-eyes yet?
Kind regards,
Terrance

Thanks for the replies guys.

I got him today, he's a Carinotetraodon irrubesco or Red Eyed Red Tailed puffer, he seems really happy in his tank, the LFS tested my water and said it was fine. I'll take some pictures soon.

How often should I feed him, and in what quantities? I've got some blood worm, he's about 2cm.

Hi I have 5 C. Irrubesco, 2 males and 3 females.
I feed mine once a day, six days a week, with as much food to make their belly round and full.
Try to variate the diet as much as possible. Mine are crazy for bloodworms but they accept also adult artemia, Krill and Daphniae. And some snails every now and then. So far they never ate snails crushing them but always attacking the soft part only, leaving the empty shell intact. So I don't think that they use snails to keep their teeth growth in check.
Females C. irrubesco are easily distinguished from the males from the brown spots/stripes on their belly that is white in the males. Males have also a dark red tail that is not colored in the females. Males tend to become a bit bigger (6-7 cm max, I think).
