Ok but picture this... I get the 50-60 gal and cycle it and all that fun stuff, then ad the two newbies in, then put the older one in. Opinions?

I would guess that a singleton used to living on his own is less likely to accept tankmates. Your current tank can realistically handle the bioload of 2 figure 8's so get 2 now and upgrade the tank later.DGabbs wrote:Ok but picture this... This is theoretically what i would like to do, then i could jut forget about the BB gobies and just have 2 f8s. Realistically i will upgrade to a 50 gallon in a year or so. Probably next summer. Would they really grow that much by then?

The problem I come across often is that folks have the greatest upgrade plans in mind & then life happens & the upgrade never does.

Fair enough, but a 40-50 gallon tank isn't a big upgrade. Maybe if my "plans" were for a 150 gal...

Some peculiar fish keepers (me) do not upgrade. Fish go from QT to their permanent home, or sometimes even the QT is their permanent home. I have a very strong suspicion that this has a lot to do with so many of my fish reaching full size and living long lives.
Some fish keepers (me again) do basically species tanks and do not believe in crowding fish or in "community" tanks.
Some fish keepers (guess who) are a bit neurotic about water quality. They do lots of water partials and try very hard not to over-feed or inappropriately feed their fish.
All of the above means that my fish tend to be healthy, long-lived, and not crowded. My tanks do not look like most hobby tanks. It took me decades to figure all this out. Unfortunately, the downside is that I do get to buy many new fish.
