Sick figure eight puffer, please help!!!

Since this board has been up, we have found there are several questions that routinely get asked in order to help diagnose problems. If you can have that information to begin with in your post, we'll be able to help right away (if we can!) without having to wait for you to post the info we need.
1) Your water parameters - pH, Ammonia, Nitrite, Nitrates and salinity (if appropriate). This is by far the most important information you can provide! Do not answer this with "Fine" "Perfect" "ok", that tells us nothing. We need hard numbers.
2) Tank size and a list of ALL inhabitants. Include algae eaters, plecos, everything. We need to know what you have and how big the tank is.
3) Feeding, water change schedule and a list of all products you are using or have added to the tank (examples: Cycle, Amquel, salt, etc)
4) What changes you've made in the tank in the last week or so. Sometimes its the little things that make all the difference.
5) How long the aquarium has been set up, and how did you cycle it? If you don't know what cycling is read this: Fishless Cycling Article and familiarize yourself with all the information. Yes. All of it.
We want to help, and providing this information will go a LONG way to getting a diagnosis and hopeful cure that much faster.
While you wait for assistance:
One of the easiest and best ways to help your fish feel better is clean water! If you are already on a regular water change schedule (50% weekly is recommended) a good step to making your fish more comfortable while waiting for diagnosis/suggestions is to do a large water change immediately. Feel free to repeat daily or as often as you can, clean water is always a good thing! Use of Amquel or Prime as a dechlor may help with any ammonia or nitrite issues, and is highly recommended.
Note - if you do not normally do large water changes, doing a sudden, large water change could shock your fish by suddenly changing their established water chemistry. Clean water is still your first goal, so in this case, do several smaller (10%) water changes over the next day or two before starting any large ones.

Re: Sick figure eight puffer, please help!!!
Man, I hate when these kinds of things happen. But it is part of fishkeeping. I would like to say, one thing at a time. Because when you start dumping abunch of meds over in the tank, it can cause things to get worse rather then better. From the pics, it looked like a injury from a fight. Usually, most fish with fighting injuries comes out ok after a good dose of a good med for bacterial and fungus disease's. Kinda like what you would do if you get a cut or scape. You put some sort of anti-bacteral solution on it before it gets infected. The anti-bacterial meds does the same for fish. The injury should not had killed him that fast, just sayin.
Btw, just keep an eye out for the other 2 F8's. Dont think it is any kind of disease in the tank that would attack them, just a bully.

It reminds me of my first DP to die. That fungus literally manifested itself and killed her overnight. 8 hours. Gone. I was shocked.
I'm sure your other F8s will be just fine, though!

Re: Sick figure eight puffer, please help!!!
The other 2 seem fine at the moment so fingers crossed.puffykid wrote:Hey Donna how are the other two doing?
My husband made me ring the fish shop on the Monday morning and they offered me a replacement, I was thinking of sticking with the 2 remaining but after discussing it with hubby we went to collect him. So I am back up to 3, he seems to have settled in well and have not noticed the other 2 causing him any probs so hopefully everything will be fine, I have a spare 15g ready just in case
I'm surprised at how much my confidence has been knocked by this, I know things happens but I'd always been one of the lucky few who had never really had to deal with anything major before. Am just glad I had this forum to turn to as when he started to go downhill, there were clear headed people to remind me of the steps I should have been taking.
Again Thank you
Here's a quick video of the new guy

That was nice of the store, I am sure you will have better luck with this one.I originally wanted to get f8's but had a hard time finding anyone to get them in, so I ended up with 1 spoiled gsp who's a weenie.

Re: Sick figure eight puffer, please help!!!
When I was looking for f8's that's all I saw was gsp, my husband was telling me to get 3 of them instead!!! I told him that if he wanted to spend a huge amount of money on a big enough marine set up then I was willing to spend the time caring for them. He soon changed his mind lmao

Oh, look at him! What a great eater!
When I saw that this topic was unread again, my heart sunk. I thought that it was another one of your F8s in trouble! I'm glad to find that it's just a cute video of your new guy!

that around the mouth seems fungal. Clean water, a good source of food and it might pull through without meds.

Re: Sick figure eight puffer, please help!!!
Thanks J-P but that puffer died the same evening I first posted, whatever it was it took him quick. The shop kindly gave me a replacement the following day, and I was advised on here to treat the tank with salt and I was wondering how long to continue this treatment?J-P wrote:that around the mouth seems fungal. Re: Sick figure eight puffer, please help!!!
I'd treat for two weeks from the day you got your new puffer, minimum. Of course, that's if no other signs come up.
