Emergency Help with Green Spot Puffer

Greetings, found a reference to your site on another forum when I was searching the GSP. I'm a High School Science Teacher and I had a student litterally walk in with a healthy looking 2" GSP in a bag and said, "here you go". I Got a bag of Aquarium Jungle Salt and a 5 gallon tank with it, with instructions to follow the instructions on the bag of salt.

A little research has revealed that these fish convert from fresh to brackish and then to salt, and they need a much larger tank than a 5gal one. So one of my questions is that I have a fully cycled 30gal salt tank with no other fish in it right now, can I acclimate the fish and place it in the saltwater tank? Keep in mind, its currently in about 2 cups of water in a plastic bag. IF I can do so, can I just use a drip line to slowly raise the salinity of the little bit of water that its in?

Any and all help greatly appreciated.

Yes you can, with a slow drip from the SW tank, into the bucket the fish is in. Keep taking water out of the bucket, as it fills. About 1 drip/second should do it.

That's exactly it drip acclimate over a couple of hours or more if poss. Welcome and good luck.

Thanks for the well wishes and the help. Quick question on food. She brought in sun dried Krill and Gammarus. From what I've read these seem to be pretty aggressive feeders, can I feed them just like I would my carnivorous saltwater fish?

I'm not sure how you feed carnivorous SW fish so hopefully this helps:

A lot of people breed their own crunchy food (snails typically, crayfish are easy too) and feed human seafood. It's relatively easy to find a seafood medley at the grocery store (shrimp, octopus, squid, scallops, mussels, etc). Just make sure there isn't added garlic and butter

Not necessarily--just don't get lazy at feeding time & toss it in every day.

No don't feed krill regularly. Use as a treat only

Hey Terrance, thanks. I actually followed a link you posted in one of the other threads over there on GSP.

FYI, my little guy is still acclimating, we are a 1.020 this morning and he's swimming around happily in the acclimation container. Hopefully he'll be able to go into the tank by the end of the day today.
