Can tank lighting stress out GSPs?

Post by postal_blowfish »

Hello Im new to the forum and I'm a newbie GSP owner, I've had 2 GSPs for almost a month now, I'm currently keeping them in a 30g tank, with one small Chinese algae eater. All the fish get along great, however I know the tank size isn't ideal for 2 GSPs, but they're pretty small right now, about 1.5 inches and I do intend on upgrading to At least a 55g soon when I have the resources.

Since I've had them they have been kept in FW, and I just recently bought instantocean marine salt and a hydrometer to change to BW, and I've read that the algae eater would be able to survive BW conditions. My first question is, how would I go about converting the water with the fish already in the tank? I don't have a separate tank in which I can place them while I add salt to their main tank, so my only real option is to add salt to their existing tank without removing them. What would be the safest way to do this? I've read mixing the salt in water in a separate container until it dissolves and then slowly adding the water into the tank, but I wanted to be sure that this was a safe method.

I have one more question, one of the GSPs has had a dark belly for several days now, and was resting at the bottom of the tank acting very sluggish. I tested the water for ammonia and it had none, but I did a 50% water change immediately to be sure. Shortly after, the puffer started acting less sluggish and swimming around the tank once more which I thought was a good sign. However his tummy remained dark. What I have noticed however, is that when I shut off the tank light for the night, and I check back on him 15 or so minutes later, is that his belly clears right up, to a milky white! This only seems to happen in the dark after the tank light has been turned off for a while. My question is could it be the tank light that is causing him to stress? And if so, are there any other tank light setups that anyone might be able to recommend that perhaps are for more sensitive fish? The light I'm currently using is the light bulb that came with the tank package, it doesn't seem to say anything about wattage on the bulb. Any ideas?

Thank you! Your help would be greatly appreciated! :)

We'd have to know a lot more about your system.
How long has it been set up?
What are the all parameters: ammonia/nitrite/nitrate/pH/ SG?
What ind of lighting?
Hoe heavy is the decor? Full tank pic?

It's been set up for about a month as well. This is my first system I've kept so unfortunately I was uneducated in how to properly cycle a tank and such, I put the fish in shortly after I had filled the tank. I currently just got a marineland LED light, and I'll work on posting pics of the tank and the parameters right now.

Those lights are for corals & very bright. Why are you using those, when a cheap fluorescent would have sufficed?

Well I do also have the fluorescent light that came with the tank, but as I said, I wasn't sure if it was the light was what was stressing my puffer, so I just yesterday bought the LED. I wasn't aware that they were for coral though :/ I posted the questions on the forum a few days ago and I was hoping for a response before I was to leave to my lfs regarding the light inquiry. Could the led lights cause harm to the GSPs?

The lights can certainly be an issue, but more for algae issues than for the puffers. The too small tank, the Chinese algae eater and not knowing the nitrite, nitrate, pH, specific gravity are likely to be much bigger issues. They can kill the fish.

Re-home the CAE ASAP.

Check the water parameters and let us know what they are.

What total wattage of light are you using for how many hours per day?

Sounds like you have a LFS looking to clean out your wallet. I'd return that $$$ light.

Return the light and use the money for a decent test kit and a larger tank

How much do LED lights usually go for? The one I have was 30$, which I didn't think was too bad, and it definitely isn't enough to get myself a bigger tank quite yet lol. Now I do have a test kit, however since I'm transitioning to brackish I wasn't sure whether I needed a sw or fw kit, so I bought a sw one, should I have gotten both?

Right now my tank's at an SG of 1.010.
Also I tested my water parameters with the sw kit, and though I don't know how accurate the results are since it's not full sw in my tank, the results came out as such:
pH: 7.8-8.0
Nitrites: 0
Nitrates: 0
Ammonia: 0.25
SG: 1.010

You shouldn't be showing any ammonia and you should be showing some nitrates, I think that you should do a 50% wc. As for the test kit you want the salt water 1.

Nitrates aren't something you add. Nitrates are something that is part of the cycle. You need to do a large water change until you have no ammonia in the tank and you will have to do this everyday until your tank finishes its cycle.

@glitter ok that's something I can do. Now how will I know when it's cycle is finished? Where should the parameters be?
