Which worms to use to soak for IPs?

Oh no! Sick fish?! Come here and see if someone can help!

Since this board has been up, we have found there are several questions that routinely get asked in order to help diagnose problems. If you can have that information to begin with in your post, we'll be able to help right away (if we can!) without having to wait for you to post the info we need.

1) Your water parameters - pH, Ammonia, Nitrite, Nitrates and salinity (if appropriate). This is by far the most important information you can provide! Do not answer this with "Fine" "Perfect" "ok", that tells us nothing. We need hard numbers.

2) Tank size and a list of ALL inhabitants. Include algae eaters, plecos, everything. We need to know what you have and how big the tank is.

3) Feeding, water change schedule and a list of all products you are using or have added to the tank (examples: Cycle, Amquel, salt, etc)

4) What changes you've made in the tank in the last week or so. Sometimes its the little things that make all the difference.

5) How long the aquarium has been set up, and how did you cycle it? If you don't know what cycling is read this: Fishless Cycling Article and familiarize yourself with all the information. Yes. All of it.

We want to help, and providing this information will go a LONG way to getting a diagnosis and hopeful cure that much faster.

While you wait for assistance:
One of the easiest and best ways to help your fish feel better is clean water! If you are already on a regular water change schedule (50% weekly is recommended) a good step to making your fish more comfortable while waiting for diagnosis/suggestions is to do a large water change immediately. Feel free to repeat daily or as often as you can, clean water is always a good thing! Use of Amquel or Prime as a dechlor may help with any ammonia or nitrite issues, and is highly recommended.

Note - if you do not normally do large water changes, doing a sudden, large water change could shock your fish by suddenly changing their established water chemistry. Clean water is still your first goal, so in this case, do several smaller (10%) water changes over the next day or two before starting any large ones.

Which worms to use to soak for IPs?

Post by kcartwright856 »

Sorry if this seems like a dumb question, but now that I have my puffers, I'm going to start treating for IPs. Their little tummies are nice and round, but I just want to be safe!

Okay, so with the fizzies (and garlic to taste!), should I be soaking frozen worms so that it can get all up in there? I have frozen bloodworms, but I will be putting the puffers on live blackworms.

I'm having a hard time imagining soaking live worms overnight with the fizzy tabs. I'm thinking it would kill them and just not have a chance to "soak in." Is that right? Should I just do the frozen worms for now while I treat and then move them over to live once the treatment is done?

I have the live worms now, so I'm not super psyched about having them in the fridge for two weeks and not doing anything with them, but it's my fault for not thinking this through ahead of time!

I think most people just use the frozen blood worms and soak that overnight with the vitamins and garlic extract. I don't think it matters if the worms are live or dead cause worms breath through their skin and have pores so even if the worm is dead it will still be absorbed in.

I'd use the frozen worms. I don't know what the meds would do to live ones. That being said, you don't need to do the treatment for 2 weeks. 4 days to a week should be more than enough.
It is absurd to talk of one animal being higher than another. We consider those, when the cerebral structure/intellectual faculties most developed, as highest. A bee doubtless would when the instincts were.

Whatever food they like best. I crush a garlic clove & add it to the soak too.

Really, PP? I can soak the live worms?

If I can, I'll do that probably and just soak both live and frozen since I really don't know what they'll go for.

Hopefully it'll be the live ones! I only got the frozen guys to have on hand "just in case".

They started going after snails within minutes of hitting the tank, though! Hopefully the worms will be accepted just as readily.

KC, what kind of pufers did you go with anyways? I might had missed it if you posted it before. Btw, liqiud garlic is a great natural parasite repellet.

5 little girl DPs! I used the liquid from a jar of minced garlic in our fridge, plus a spoonful of the actual pieces. I think that was sufficient?

PP, mine are actually still alive? They must be... super worms. I thought for sure the meds and garlic would kill them. I used about a cup of tank water, 1/4 tab of the Jungle fizzies, and a spoonful of garlic.

I wish I knew for sure that some of them made it into their tummies. Most of them had nice and full bellies, but I think it was from all the snails that they were eating! They ran away from the tongs, so I just filled the worm cone and went to lay down because I was so exhausted.
