Where can i buy a DP puffer?

Post by Gooburz »

This is a couple part question, I am currently located on the east coast of the USA i'm in Maryland in between Baltimore and D.C. I'm looking to buy DP's and don't know where to get them from. Could someone recommend a place or a store that ships them (a good one).

2nd part of the questions is I have seen people say that DP's are freshwater ONLY, but i've seen articles saying they can do brackish water as well. Does anyone have DP's and tried them in brackish water or are they 1 of few puffers that do freshwater only?

Just want to know about the water conditions mainly because my fiance has a 5gal and got ride of her betta fish and wants to get a DP puffer, I know 1 will do just fine in a 5 Gal tank. Any info would be great!

Hi again :supercool: I still can't help with the first part of your question but dp's are fresh water only. Good luck with your search :D

Check Aquabid.com frequently. If someone selling a pack of them, just request that they send 1, sellers up there are generally very willing to work with you.

You are correct that 1 DP can fit in a 5 gallon, and they are freshwater only. The aquarium should be well decorated with a lot of hiding spots and MUST be fully cycled before you add the puffer.

If you need any more advice please ask. Best of luck in your search! =]

I am getting mine from That Fish Place, which is semi-local to me, so I'm actually going to go pick them up in person this weekend.

They are a great fish store, though, and they do ship.

I just bought some puffers online from The Wet Spot in Oregon.. Anthony was great at answering all my questions and the fish were packaged very well.
They made the trip across country to Florida in good health!

Shipping to Florida was $45.. pretty pricey IMO. But I was tired of bugging all the LFS to see if they could get the puffers I wanted. :D

From where i am, It cost just $0.80.. Its readily available in almost all LFS. But the sad thing is that people here usually buy them just to keep snails population in check for planted tanks.

$4 each?? I'm so jealous!! Since PP suggested they are better in pairs, I would totally get another girl if I didn't have to spend another $45 in shipping!

It's true. There is a forum for planted tanks, and people are always making threads about getting rid of snails and people tell them to get DPs.

Anyway... the place closest to me has DPs for 7 each, but the place I'm going to tomorrow (!!!!!!!) has them for 2.99 normally, but 30% this weekend.

Aside from shipping cost, the thing I don't like about shipping fish in is that you can't see the fish you're getting. You don't know if you're getting the best ones out of the tank, and more importantly for me, you can't know for sure which sex you're getting!

Depending on their sizes, I'm pretty darn good at telling male DPs from females. As much as I want tiny little buggers so that I can watch them grow, I'd really like to have them old enough to make sure that I get all females.

exactly why id rather buy things that are living locally even if id have to drive a bit for them! besides the fact that shipping prices are ridiculous.

honestly, its hard for me to tell males and females apart until theyve been in my tank for a while. the females usually keep their happy little puffer tummies and the males dont.
