Snails for GSP
My GSPs are still young, the biggest being about an inch. i tried feeding them some pond snails for teeth purposes as well as give them something new, but they didn't seem to want to eat the snails whole. they would peck at it, but it would just fall to the bottom of the tank and they really woulnd't really try to devour it. i broke the snail with my fingers, and ate the heck out of it, but breaking the snail, to me, doesn't seem like it would do much for their teeth, not to mention it just makes a mess if they don't get all the little particles of snail. are they still too young for me to worry about their teeth? and if not, where can i get some really small snails so they will actually be able to get it in their mouths and chew it?

Use pond or ramshorn snails, crush then at first ubtil the fish understand that they are food - they will not have seen these species in the wild. Ramshorns are more easily crushed by young fish as their shells are thinner than pond snails. Once they get the idea, there will be no further problems. Use the smaller snails for the training. You can crush them with a spoon or between two spoons, or large forceps.

They will still grind their teeth on the crushed shells.

yeah i figured they'd still grind their teeth on the crushed shells. i have an abundance of pond snails at my disposal so I'll try to get my hands on some ramshorn's to see what they think

so i called my lfs and asked if they had Ramshorn snails, the guy said they are illegal to sell...?

wow really?! they must be legal in some states and not in others or something. I was really hoping to get my hands on some! i'm going to call a couple of other places and see what they say..

I am not aware of any restrictions on ramshorn snails in the USA.

so i called lfs store back today and he said that he's not allowed to deal with them. he said that when the "Federal people" come in, that's what they are looking for. i asked if he knew of anywhere i could get them, and he said all the people he knows in state can't deal with them either, and said he couldn't say if it's just an in state thing or not. he said someting about it being the same way in Florida with shipping them or something. seems like a Government cover up or conspiracy or something lol he said sometimes when he gets plants in the Ramshorn are on them, he can't touch them and i guess when the forementioned ''feds'' come looking for them, they take them haha this is ridiculous to me! the guy seemed to be beating around the bush about it like it was illegal for him to even talk about them! from just the little bit i googled, the only thing i really saw was that it's the eggs that are illegal to sell.

I am only guessing at this but some states have put bans on certain species of fish,insects, shellfish that are over taking areas and have no natural predator in that area. I know there is a really hefty fine if you bring zebra muscles into the Adirondacks I am not sure if it is state wide or just my area.
It maybe the same thing with snails where you live (again only a guess), if it is than it should be listed on your states DEC sight. if it is not illegal as this guy said, then I would try farming my own.
They are really easy to farm once you find a dozen or snails. put them in a 2 gallon tank with some plants and put in directs sunlight for good algae growth. You will have snails in no time.

yeah, I give up on trying to figure it out, I got a lot of 25 off ebay and will just start my own colony.

no, was going to go with him, but then found someone selling BB and Pea-sized and decided to go with that just to be on the safe side since my puffer's are still young. that way there is a better chance of them eating them whole and saving me from having to crush them and making an unnecesary mess. that was my thought process anyway..
