Potential Upgrade
So, I have been given the permission to do an upgrade for Yoshi. Denzil and I would like to put her in a 90 gallon tank. This will be a long project though, as I plan on making all the additional LR that I need.
Just wondering your thoughts: Yoshi has tank mates now, and she's always left them alone. Hell, my blenny has been more of a PITA than Yoshi ever has been. As she grows older, in the bigger tank, will tank mates still be possible? I was curious as to what everyone's experience or thought was on this. Hopefully someone will have helpful insight ^.^

Re: Potential Upgrade
That sounds really exciting! A 90 gallon would be an awesome size, and homemade LR is a really awesome project.
Tankmates are never a sure thing, sadly. She may never mess with them, and one day she may snap. What may be best to do is put all your tank mates into the new tank before putting Yoshi in, that way she doesn't really think of them as prey (of course this may not work).
Best of luck and I look forward to seeing the project in the works and finished. =]

Re: Potential Upgrade
Thank you! I'll make sure to post up pics. Definitely going to be a project! I am trying to find a plumbed tank right now, but looks like I may be stuck getting a normal one and trying to plumb that -__-
I hope she leaves them alone. LoL, her body language last night was so funny-- I added a diamondback goby for my substrate, and the blenny and goby were at war with each other. She followed them around watching them, not able to figure out why they were arguing. She just looked totally confused and her puffer facial expressions were hilarious. Thank goodness they got over each other after about an hour.
I want to get a ninety, hopefully with more room, her getting bigger won't mean she will get more aggressive.

Re: Potential Upgrade
Are you trying to find one on craigslist? Not sure about your area, but I know in mine they generally don't have anything that large up there. I would recommend trying to find a local reef club or something like that in your area. They sell their tanks off sometimes, and most of them are plumbed.
She sounds like a puffer with a lotta personality lol.

That's a great idea!!! Yes, LoL I have been stalking, and checking CL every couple of hours. I'll have to look into it. I found a tank, at a great price, but it was two hours away and I don't have a truck. Then I called about it anyways and he had already sold it = / ugh. I keep looking though LoL. I will find something eventually. I have a coworker who's husband is super into reef aquariums, so he's going to ask his circle of pals to see if anything comes up. I see alot of tanks, but I want one with a built in overflow (preferably) and those are few and far between. But seeings how this is a long project, I figure I have the time to stalk CL LoL. Now I will look around for some local reef forums.

Re: Potential Upgrade
Well, just got a 90 gallon, reef ready tank, brand spankin' new for $300. Now I just have to go to Antioch and pick it up = / LoL. She's also ordering me a matching wood stand for $150, and she's holding all of it for me.
It was a bit more than I wanted to pay, but considering it's brand spanking new, and she's willing to order me the stand AND it's plumbed, I couldn't pass it up. Also got to put it on a credit card so I didn't have to use any money from savings. Building up my credit, upgrading my tank all at the same time.
I guess now I have to start making LR. ^.^

Thanks! LoL AND I don't even have to pick it up!! I have a coworker from Antioch and she lives 10 minutes away from the place. She even has a GMC Jimmy. PERFECT ^.^ I will have the tank tomorrow, and the stand next Wednesday ^.^

Re: Potential Upgrade
2 quick questions: what size sump/refugium for a 90 gallon and in a sump, is it possible to still use a hob protein skimmer?

Re: Potential Upgrade
A lot of people use the biggest sump they can fit into the stand, because it increases the water volume.
As far as your skimmer question I am not 100% sure, but I don't see why you couldn't just hang it on the back of the sump, and if that doesn't work, keep it on the back of the tank. However, your HOB skimmer may not be big enough for your 90 gallon.

Yea use the biggest sump you can fit, you get more flexability that way. Don't know bout the skimmer I'm afraid
It's amazing how easy maintenance is. If done regularly and thoroughly

Well I hope so, I bought it with an upgrade in mind. This is from their site, what do you think?
BAK-PAK™ Dual Pak
CPR has taken the proven technology behind the BAK-PAK™ 2, and created the larger BAK-PAK™ Dual Pak.
The Dual Pak provides a complete hang-on filtration unit for tanks up to 100 gallons that incorporates two protein skimmers with a biological filtration chamber in the middle.
Using proven Rejuvenation Venturi technology, the protein skimmers are flooded with bubbles for constant removal of excess organics.
The biological chamber utilizes CPR's Bio-Bale™ biological filter media to provide maximum surface area for beneficial bacteria to colonize.
Simply hang on BAK-PAK™ Dual Pak on the back of an aquarium, plug in the rejuvenation venturi powerheads, and enjoy a worry-free operation!

Re: Potential Upgrade
Thanks! I am super super excited! It will give all my fish including Yoshi, more room, and gives me an excuse to make my own LR LOL. Also, I am replacing the substrate with an actual sand, and not the crap I have. I can't get any sand sifters like stars or snails because it's too chunky right now = / and I will finally be able to add a sump! Getting the tank today....omg, can't wait!sgtmyers88 wrote:Thats a sweet upgrade!
