Help I have recently purchased two irrubesco puffers! Everything has been going swimmingly! Izzie has alway been shy, Nona loves to come and play! Both were very slim when they arrived. Both were eating well. Nona would eat (if I let her)till she exploded! She is lovely and round extremley active and friendly begging with her little red eyes! Izzie belly now is sunken in and she is not interested in food. Nona is definatley the dominant one but any skirmishes are short lived and they never come into contact. I have offered Bloodworm, squid, muscles. What I dont get is izzie was eating all these and now has stopped! Nona is the picture of health, izzie is active but looks like a puffer shaped skeleton!
I have a 60 ltr aquarium
2x Irrubesco Puffers
Two 60 ltr Filters
Sand Substrate
Plastic Plants
Ammonia 0 Nitrite 0 Nitrates 5
Weekly 50-60% Water Changes
No changes apart from the water changes since Ive had them.

Since this board has been up, we have found there are several questions that routinely get asked in order to help diagnose problems. If you can have that information to begin with in your post, we'll be able to help right away (if we can!) without having to wait for you to post the info we need.
1) Your water parameters - pH, Ammonia, Nitrite, Nitrates and salinity (if appropriate). This is by far the most important information you can provide! Do not answer this with "Fine" "Perfect" "ok", that tells us nothing. We need hard numbers.
2) Tank size and a list of ALL inhabitants. Include algae eaters, plecos, everything. We need to know what you have and how big the tank is.
3) Feeding, water change schedule and a list of all products you are using or have added to the tank (examples: Cycle, Amquel, salt, etc)
4) What changes you've made in the tank in the last week or so. Sometimes its the little things that make all the difference.
5) How long the aquarium has been set up, and how did you cycle it? If you don't know what cycling is read this: Fishless Cycling Article and familiarize yourself with all the information. Yes. All of it.
We want to help, and providing this information will go a LONG way to getting a diagnosis and hopeful cure that much faster.
While you wait for assistance:
One of the easiest and best ways to help your fish feel better is clean water! If you are already on a regular water change schedule (50% weekly is recommended) a good step to making your fish more comfortable while waiting for diagnosis/suggestions is to do a large water change immediately. Feel free to repeat daily or as often as you can, clean water is always a good thing! Use of Amquel or Prime as a dechlor may help with any ammonia or nitrite issues, and is highly recommended.
Note - if you do not normally do large water changes, doing a sudden, large water change could shock your fish by suddenly changing their established water chemistry. Clean water is still your first goal, so in this case, do several smaller (10%) water changes over the next day or two before starting any large ones.

Have you treated them of internal parasites? If not it would be a good thing to do so. The sunken belly that you're seeing is an indication that she has parasites. They both probably do but some fish are affected more than others.
Since you're in the UK I'm not sure what dewormers are available to do. Can you get Jungle fizz anti-parasite tablets? What IP medications are available to you? Once we know what you can get we'll let you know how to treat the fish. What you'll end up doing is soaking the food in the medication for a few hours before feeding.

It is absurd to talk of one animal being higher than another. We consider those, when the cerebral structure/intellectual faculties most developed, as highest. A bee doubtless would when the instincts were.

Remember garlic soaked food is irresistible, good to help keep strength up till ip meds are to hand. Get her in a breeding net for feeding so you can monitor what she eats, and to ensure she gets some if weak
It's amazing how easy maintenance is. If done regularly and thoroughly

Thank you for all your replys! Ive been feeding Izzie very closely since my last post and have been treating the aquarium with an anti internal parasite solution. Today is the first day I have seen a real improvement! She has nice round belly now! Not as plump as Nona but im sure she will improve further with time! Thanks again for all your help! Internal parasites need to be treated by soaking the food in suitable meds it's the only effective way. Glad she is looking a little better but you may need to treat the food
