For the scientists: A question.

Oh no! Sick fish?! Come here and see if someone can help!

Since this board has been up, we have found there are several questions that routinely get asked in order to help diagnose problems. If you can have that information to begin with in your post, we'll be able to help right away (if we can!) without having to wait for you to post the info we need.

1) Your water parameters - pH, Ammonia, Nitrite, Nitrates and salinity (if appropriate). This is by far the most important information you can provide! Do not answer this with "Fine" "Perfect" "ok", that tells us nothing. We need hard numbers.

2) Tank size and a list of ALL inhabitants. Include algae eaters, plecos, everything. We need to know what you have and how big the tank is.

3) Feeding, water change schedule and a list of all products you are using or have added to the tank (examples: Cycle, Amquel, salt, etc)

4) What changes you've made in the tank in the last week or so. Sometimes its the little things that make all the difference.

5) How long the aquarium has been set up, and how did you cycle it? If you don't know what cycling is read this: Fishless Cycling Article and familiarize yourself with all the information. Yes. All of it.

We want to help, and providing this information will go a LONG way to getting a diagnosis and hopeful cure that much faster.

While you wait for assistance:
One of the easiest and best ways to help your fish feel better is clean water! If you are already on a regular water change schedule (50% weekly is recommended) a good step to making your fish more comfortable while waiting for diagnosis/suggestions is to do a large water change immediately. Feel free to repeat daily or as often as you can, clean water is always a good thing! Use of Amquel or Prime as a dechlor may help with any ammonia or nitrite issues, and is highly recommended.

Note - if you do not normally do large water changes, doing a sudden, large water change could shock your fish by suddenly changing their established water chemistry. Clean water is still your first goal, so in this case, do several smaller (10%) water changes over the next day or two before starting any large ones.

For the scientists: A question.

Post by J-P »

I have been approached by a company that offers an "all natural" anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, anti-parasite, and that is invert safe medication.

I have asked for the test results and "white papers" for the product and am waiting a reply.

Further than that, I would like to know what pertinent questions to ask. Most anti-bacterial meds are not filter safe. These claim they are. Most anti parasire meds are not invert safe. These claim they are. Thus I really have my doubts.

Here is the ingredient list and dosages (don't be shocked... it is in powder form and highly concentrated):
Composition
Potassium Monopersulphate Triple Salt ……………………………52%
Sodium Chloride……………………..2.0%
Excipients……………………………q.s. to 100%

Applications
Treatment Periods
Disinfection before stocking 1-2 days prior to stocking 1.2 g/m3
Disease prevention in stocked ponds 1 time per 10 days 0.8-1.0 g/m3
Disease outbreaks 1 time per 3 days repeated for 3 times 0.8-1.2 g/m3
Treatment of fungi buildup 1 time per day repeated for 3 days 1.5 g/m3
Water purification 1 time every 3 days 0.2-0.3 g/m3

1 meter cubed = 300+ gallons. / 1000l

So we are talking VERY low quantities here to treat an average aquarium.

So... the main questions is.... How can we find out if this stuff is for real?

I remain sceptical so far. Not much to assess anyway. I think the manufacturer has to proove his product works. As hobbyists we can hardly do the necessary, expensive studies. "anti-bacterial" alone is a little unprecise... which are killed, which are not, the same - as you note - can be said about "anti-parasite".

Corvus is a gentleman. I used to be, but I recovered.

Those "claims" are, in their current form, meaningless. Darn near everything is in some manner or under certain conditions "antibacterial". Specificity counts, big time. "Disease prevention" requires even more specificity. Disease prevention will not stand up in court - as a simple label it carries about the valuse of the old cigarette ads saying "not a cough in a carload" - i.e., totally meaningless.

If the brush is too broad and the claims too wide and totally unspecific, bet that it is garbage. Ask the trial data, but do not hold your breath or send money.

Thank you for the replies :) My gut tells me this is BS... but given the chemical compounds and dosages.. made me ask the question.

I have never seen before "triple salt" ... If I get any more info I'll let you know.
