Porcupine Puffer Tank & Tank Mates

Post by jfcooper »

Hey, guys. I'm a puffer novice. I've fallen in love with puffers in general, but I think most of all with porcupines. I think I'm going to buy a 125 gallon tank and I'd like to get a puffer and a tank mate or two, but I want to make sure the puffer is happy most of all. I really like eels and I'd probably get a snowflake if I bought one. I suppose my question is: how big of a tank would I need to have a porcupine, a snowflake, and maybe a trigger or a tang?

I've been poking around on the forums and elsewhere online because I'm the type to obsessively research things before I make the jump and purchase something big, especially when it involves live animals. Thanks for all the info!

Glad you are researching first. The porc needs 120g min on it's own and I think snowflakes need lots of space. Your best bet is to work out what size tank you can afford and fit in your house.
It's amazing how easy maintenance is. If done regularly and thoroughly

yeah, if i were you and wanted to 'test out' tankmates, knowing they might not live, id try to get at least a 200g tank. ill leave the tankmate options for someone else to comment on as i have no experience with porcupine pufers or saltwater.

Good person to ask is chuckfriedrice. Petey was in a tank with lots of tank mates, but after two deaths, I think he's moving them all out....
5.5g: Pond snails
5.5g: Red Cherry Shrimp and Rams
10g: PZ the Pee Wee (DP), Ghost shrimp, Otos x3
36g: Luau the F8, Zebra nerites x8, sometimes a herd of ghost shrimp for food
60g: Perches the starry blenny, 1 watchman goby Snaps the l.c. hermit, 2 emerald crabs, 1 red crab, 2 turbos, 7 asteas, 2 nerites, 2 clown gobies and 2 firefish gobies (upgrading to a 90 gallon reef)

RIP Yoshi, you are dearly missed <3

From what Ive learned from Petey is he has a taste for Black and white fish . He has eaten a small saddleback clown , killed a domino damsel and a coral catfish came up mia about 6 months back. Pretty sure its the size of the fish . The only fish with him at the moment are fish that hide at night , A diamond goby, humbug damsel ,a Pink smith damsel and a Coral beauty angel . If you really want tank mates I would say larger fish the better, watch them closely the domino was attacked in front of me , I didnt react quick enough when Petey was hover around it. .
170G Picasso Trigger, snails,Damsels, Coral Beauty Angelfish and Diamond Goby .
