Hi, im sure no one remembers me... But I used to have a fahaka named kukah. I sold him to start up a reef tank... Needless to say, I miss my poof way too much. Ive had dwarf puffers, the fahaka, one that I dont remember the name of but it was super boring and brown, and I had a couple gsp (had the gsp way back when I thought they were "community" fw fish yadda yadda yadda)

I just found a 50gal bow front on craigslist for $20.... I know rite! $20 freaking bucks! Even comes with led lighting. Anyhoo, since its too small for a fahaka, ill be going with gsp. Im thinking about getting 2 since theyre small (eventually selling one back to my lfs when they begin to mature).

I do have a couple questions though before I dive into gsp. Since they pretty much are all in fw when you buy them, I will have to convert to sw over time. My main question is, if I put some lr from my reef tank in the new fw tank, will it kill off the bacteria or will it transfer? I HATE cycleing a tank, so if I can avoid it... I try at all costs lol

Oh, and can I feed them my sw food when they are still in fw? Its a home made frozen food that contains squid, calamari, clams, oyster, mysis and a bunch of other blended up sw creatures. (of course I will be feeding the occasional fiddler crab or clam in a half shell ect.)

There was talk about drip acclimation as there has been success with young GSP's transferring and living in full marine with better overall health and growth. (A LFS around my area tried this with a few GSP's who came from the same batch/shipment with great success as the fish were more active and looked much healthier than the ones in light BW.)

But if you want to do FW/BW two or three Figure 8's will work nicely in there!

Hows your fahaka and her "ugly tank" doing? :-> I never personally found anything wrong with the gravel but I remember everyone gave u flack about it.

If I had room for a bigger tank, id go get a new fahaka, such a stupid decision on my part. He was easily the coolest fish I ever had. He even came to the top of the tank to let me pet him. I kept his pets to a minimum, but I wanted to make sure he was able to be handled so I could clip his teeth if need be without sedation

Id like to do gsp and bring them to full marine one day, but id like to do it slowly like over a few months. I loved their personalities when I had them in the past and I like their look better too. At any point, weather it be when they are young or only when they are adult, can they be housed with a dwarf lion fish? I love them, but they would eat my little community fish I have now.

Welcome back. If you hate cycling drip acclimate to full marine, buying 2 would be a pain, they are much more personable on their own. Mixing puffers and lion fish always ends in tears, the puffer will likely get stung

Ahhhh boooo! O well, I can do without the lion. so what other sw fish get along with a gsp? Interested in other puffer species as well as other fish. If I keep it to just one puff, that would be okay with me, but the hubby wont be so happy about it. He already gripes about only having 5 little fish in my 75gal.

I have my GSPs with a pair of percula clowns and a starry blenny. Mine are very passive though.....I have never seen them try to attack any fish which often times isn't the case. Just a thought, if you are interested in other types of puffers a 50 gallon is sounds like a perfect size for a blue spotted toby puffer or pretty much any puffer from the Canthigaster family. Are tobies hard to care for? Like are they particularly sensitive? Ive always loved tobies but I either assumed theyre really sensitive or I read that they are. I ask because I am fairly new to sw, all my past puffers were fw. Ive had my reef for a little less than a year, so I tend to stick with the more hardy fish. Ive had good luck so far though (except getting some diseased fish here and there but I qt them first), ive only lost one coral and part of a frogspawn, so I suppose im doing well enough to start housing more sensitive species

welcome back! pretty much your questions were answered. i had success with a false perc clownfish and some faster moving damsels. be warned though that the damsels could become way aggressive as they mature and become more territorial. i had to get rid of one that grew up with my GSP because he became too aggressive for me to be able to subject my puffer to. it was so strange because that damsel would act like the puffer as he grew up, following him, eating with him, but when he got older every once in a while he would go after the puffer to shoo him away. this specific type was the blue velvet damsel, awesome looking fish as a juvenile but uglier as they get older. he had great personality though

Lol, good memory. Im still not married, but we are quickly headded down that road, so I always call him hubby we are saving up to get married. Ive got all the honey moon money..... To where you ask??? Australia! (solely to swim with the fishes.... And maybe see a kolala or 2, but mainly the fish)
