I wonder what they put in the water...

Post by Troender »

...around here. My mandarins are spawning several times a week. Tonight I was looking for eggs with a flashlight when I realized that there was lots and lots of fry in the tank. The only thing it can be is clownfish fry. My tomatos have been a bit more aggressive lately, so I have been looking for eggs. But I haven't seen any. Well, I was not prepared for clownfish fry. I have to try to raise some of them, of course, and I've collected some of them and put in another tank, and now I really need to read up on clownfish breeding. I really had not planned on doing this, so now I have to dig into my equipment cupboad to see if I find something I don't have in use. It's going to be late before going to bed tonight! But what a surprise this was! :happydance:

Great! But fry rearing is really a chore IME. Cultivating algae and the right size 'pods is pretty demanding - or was back when I tried it.

As I've already prepared for raising mandarinfish fry, I have a production going on two different kinds of phytoplancton and a mix of rotifiers and copepods. When the fry has grown a little bit, I will also start up my brine shrimp hatchery. So all is prepared to welcome little ones. Luckily. :D But I was a bit stressed out last night, when I had to dig up something to put the new fry in, and find a place to keep it too. The area that I have in my house that is for breeding stuff, is stacked to the limit: two small fish tanks that is actually for fish, plus one small empty one (but for water and equipment), two ice cream boxes of corydoras fry and eggs, 5 bottles of copepods/rotifiers/phytoplancton (and lighting for them too), one tank with a large plancton collector in (to keep mandarin eggs and fry in), and some equipment as air pump, magnifier glass, flashlight, a large box of everything needed in fishkeeping (well, a lot of it, at least), fish food, and so on... The tank with my new fry I had to put on top of the box where I usually keep my dog food (but luckily not right now) - there was no place for it anywhere else. Here's a pic of some of the total chaos in my kitchen right now.

Lol home made laboratory. It reminds me of so many corners/ cupboards in my house along with my mothers house. I don't get to set up to many new aquariums etc now as I am trying to condense down. But I am being pushed towards setting up a dp tank by my wife as she misses ours lol. There was me trying to conserve cash due to current circumstances, secretly I want to ( don't tell) but want some new stuff also so need to continue to barter lol. Great news about your new arrivals and all the best in growing them big and healthy
It's amazing how easy maintenance is. If done regularly and thoroughly

LOL! That looks as scary as my tank room. It frightens novices.

I would love to try breeding mandarins - they are such cool fish.

 LOL. I think the police would have raided the house if they saw these things. They would think there were a lot of things that looks suspicious.
I know one thing worse than drinking from those bottles though. A friend of mine managed to drink half a cup with the excellent mix of Pepsi and bloodworms. According to her it tastes as bad as it smells. She was sick for days afterwards.

OMG! I think my clownfishes have spawned again today! Tonight they don't seem to move away from their favourite spot, and I have seen the male even chasing off a piece of algae that came with the current. I have only 5 marine fish all together, and 4 of them are spawning quite often! The 5th of course don't have a chance, as it's a single lawnmower blenny. It don't have a mate (and wouldn't care for one either - my blenny is a mean fish!). I really wonder what they put in the water around here!

That's awesome! LoL I took a pic of your kitchen picture with my phone to send to my bf. He was complaining about the lack of wall space in the apartment because of my fish tanks. I told him to quit complaining cause it could be a lot worse hahaha.

I wish you were closer. I would love a tank with a mandarin in it =(

My display tanks look fine from one or two sides. Anyone brave enough to go behind them and look gets an education.

I think that the back view, even of nice displays, can scare off a number of folks.
