There are many places around me where you can buy meat that you know exactly where it came from and what breed it was. Some people sell their meat right on their farm, others sell it through a privately owned store, and others at the local farmers market. All commercial meats in my area must be slaughtered at a licensed facility but I can easily find out how the animals are raised (many welcome visitors to their farms). I know more than the average person about livestock and most definitely support local farmers who treat their animals in a way that I support. There are also chains that only sell meat that can be accounted for and provide what welfare standard that piece of meat conforms to right on the package.

Certainly. Careless mass production of living creatures is all about efficiency - people seem to think that it's healthy and appropriate to eat a pound of meat a day.

Sugar is worse....and flour, I might add. But who is to say? People live longer & are fatter....

My family had an interest in, and I grew up with a cattle operation right behind the house. Bovines are not just bovines.

I have been away from home a very long time, but still we have no real difficulty finding high-quality meats. It really is not necessary to eat McJunk. We certainly do not. Quality operations are still around.

But for the most part, even supermarkets, have lower quality meat. I remember what a steak and a turkey looked like 30 years ago. Not the same...

It's been so long since I've eaten meat, just the look of steak disgusts me now. Even if the cow had a happy life, I couldn't eat it at this point.

As for discus, been there, done that. We had a tank crash (no idea what happened, was gone for a couple hours, came back and half the fish were dead, half looked perfectly normal) and lost the discus. It was too much of a financial hit for us so we aren't doing it again. I did enjoy them for the year and a half I had them though.
