i got some tiny little dps! too many of them XD

Post by hadla »

so i bought 3 of the 5 that were in the tank, came home and put them in the 10g, felt bad a half hourlater about leaving the other 2 so i went back and got them XD ill keep an eye out and if there is aggression, ill take the mean ones back to aqualife for credit. theyre so tiny! like half an inch long. so i never noticed how dps almost always have their little tails curled and figgy doesnt. i guess its because theyre so small, they need to lol. it was so funny! my betta was very interested in the bag floating but didnt really care once they were out the bag. its funny! my betta goes up to one and flares out at him, the dp could care less XD so anyway, i wasnt going to leave my betta with them cause im afraid of the aggression both ways so my betta is here with me at my fiances house in his (now very understocked) tank lol. im hoping they are all females or 4 females and 1 male so i can keep them all. ok i just wanted to get my excitement out! ill post pics once im back home and can get decent ones.

oh question: my betta is used to bloodworms since thats what the eel loaches eat. will he go back to eating flakes? my fiance doesnt want to do frozen foods. his idea of feeding fish is putting some flakes in the tank.

I may have to tell you off about your current stocking level. You aren't planning for the 10g to be a long term home? I am guessing not lol. You will find yourself glued to their tank watching them, they have huge personalities for such tiny fish
It's amazing how easy maintenance is. If done regularly and thoroughly

If the ten in question is stocked with the fish you describe in your signature plus 5 DPs, you are grossly overstocked with an unsupportable tank mix. Even if densely planted. That is just unsupportable.

Flakes are not a suitable diet for DPs either. I use snails and live blackworms.

You do need another significantly larger tank for the DPs alone if you plan on keeping them.

Won't you have to buy frozen or live blood worms for the dwarf puffers anyway?

my betta is not in the tank with them. he is in my fiances 29g. once we move in a few months, my 10g will be switched with his 29g (or ill move figgy into the 29 and the dps into the 20). ive had dps before and im going to feed them the frozen bloodworms i give to figgy. i figured the stocking levels should be fine until they all move to the 29g because the eel loaches are always either in the gravel or under the driftwood. and like i said, if there are any grumpy puffers, theyre going back to aqualife.

I have to say how jealous I am, though my tank isn't ready yet and I want everything to be perfect before I bring puffs home! Not to mention, I need to wait for warmer weather and for my shubunkin goldfish, Mabel, to grow a bit before she goes to live with my grandma in one of her water garden ponds.

I'm really going to miss her, but when I asked my husband about getting another tank for her, he said, "I know you're in nesting mode, but no more tanks!" Even though we only have the one. And I may or may not have snuck a two gallon hex into my studio. Shh.

lol! nesting mode! heh. if you were near me, id give you my filter cartridge to get your tank ready faster (unless yours is already cycled) and 2 of the dps since i know you would take good care of them. i didnt want to leave the other 2 in the store for someone who has no puffer experience or knowledge to buy.

what are you putting in the 2 gallon?

Pics please :)

I hope the aggressive behavior will happen soon so that you can take them back to LFS and then you get to keep 2 of the nicer ones.

Yes, pics!

And my tank is cycled, so it's ready in that regard. But I am planning on getting 5 or so DPs, so I need to let my plants grow in more. They are off to a really nice start, but two or three months should really make it an awesome home!

As for the two gallon... not sure. Right now, it's just holding extra moss and tiny plantlets that don't have a home yet in my "real" tank. I may do a few shrimp or micro crabs. Who knows!

"Plantlet" or "plantlets" is standard terminology for those plants producing tiny offsets from mature foliage, frequently leaf edges and tips (Java Ferns, etc.), but also from leaf axils (aquatic "banana" plants). Such adventitious plantlets are common in several drought-resistant terrestrial lineages also.

There is nothing "funny" about that terminology. Standard usage among gardeners.

It does sound like a cute word though--like a baby plant!

I think it's a funny word. It sounds cute!
"I will give you a talisman. Whenever you are in doubt, or when the self becomes too much with you, apply the following test. Recall the face of the poorest and the weakest man whom you may have seen, and ask yourself, if the step you contemplate is going to be of any use to him or her. Will she gain anything by it? Will it restore her to a control over her own life and destiny? In other words, will it lead to freedom for the hungry and spiritually starving millions? Then you will find your doubts and your self melt away."
