Hmm, I'm already around 1.012 and heading upwards to SW territory. I don't think it could handle it. Oh well, I guess I could toss it into my FW tank.

In a refugium you want fast growth for mazimum nutrient extraction (with the usual macros, you harvest at least 50% per month and more is better) . I don't see Marimo balls every growing fast, even if they would grow in SW (no experience there). [/i]

Got this from fish geeks:

Native to Lake Akan in Japan, they are considered a National Treasure. Tolerent of most water conditions, including mild salinity levels. (Kasselmann reports up to 6%)

As the name implies, Algae balls are in fact algae. They are non invasive, and do not seem to be bothered by any common algae eating fish. Tolerent of even low light, they will grow faster with higher light levels, and CO2 addition. Most on the market are about golf ball size, but reports have them reaching up to 10 inches. As they get bigger, lack of light will cause the center to die and become hollow. In high light, CO2 tanks, during photosynthesis, they will float. Good current/movement will help them keep their round shape. They do attract some debris, but can be cleaned in the same fashion as a filter sponge. Propigation can be done through splitting.

While they have been around for a while, they have only recently become readily available through various plant sources. Not a lot of information is available on them, in fact, Tropica has none listed. The above information is based on my experience with them, along with some insight from Tom Barr.

Tom Barr..very intellegent man. 6% salinity level, translates to??
Be very nice for my fuge, but no where can I find info on anything full marine. I just might get some to see what happens in my fuge. RTR, think this will mess w/my tank, or just die in the fuge

I'd use Chaetomorpha linum - easy and very hungry, wants good current/water flow. I would not mess with Marimo.

Tropica does list them. I have linked to it before, but i don't have the link on hand atm.

here we go: http://www.tropica.com/productcard_1.asp?id=000C

they don't call it a marimo ball, but i believe that's it.
