Thats the trouble when so called responsible parents get there children fish . The places that sell them in the first place are also largely to blame . More awareness needs to be raised . Lets start a campaign !!!! ?? anyone ?? ......

Sort of disagree, respectfully so. You can't place a very large amount of blame on the people who are out to make money. If they all cared about the things and animals they sold, they wouldn't do it in the first place (ie Petmsart, Petco) who have amateurs that they hire off the streets and through them through a two day video training session. I blame the parents-- unless the child has demonstrated some kind of responsibility with some kind of family pet or fish tank, then why go get a set up, and not do any research before throwing some fish together for a "community?"

I was never allowed pets growing up, not unless I took a stuffed animal and cared for it just like it was real for 2 months. I had to take it out, let it potty, "clean up" after it, and train it. If I then demonstrated that I was serious about it, they would let me chose a puppy from the shelter after we all sat down as a family and did some research into what we ideally were looking for. My dad was also a very learned fish keeper-- if I wanted a tank, I had to help him every week with his tanks to make sure that that was what I really wanted to do.

I think today that people give into their kids whims to easily. I think parents should make better and more learned decisions before going on an impulse buy; they need to research and they can no longer fall back on "there isn't a lot out there to read" that is what the internet is for. And if they come back and say "I don't have the time to look into it" then IMHO, they don't have the time to properly take care of any animal that they are thinking about bringing home.

That might work in the UK, but I don't think it would ever fly in the US. We have politicians that are too greedy in office, and are not worried about new legislation or sadly enough, education. So no, I won't blame the establishments as of yet, but I sure as h**l will blame their parents.

^^^ People like that parent who think like this, shouldn't be allowed to have pets. That's why we have things like puppy mills. However, there is an article that is interesting, hopefully it will get the ball rolling on new legislation for animals: http://today.msnbc.msn.com/id/45873492/ ... wuC69RSTHg

I bet 90% of puppymill puppies come from parents buying their kid a puppy they saw in a pet shop.

I do not see this as sad. They are doing the right think and trying to find someone that can care of the fish. Better than ignoring the tank and just letting the fish died. As for the parents, they bite more than they can chew. Heck, i did too for a bit. But i wanted to keep my fish so sat and read article after article until i figured how to fix my problems. Not everyone is up for the challenge. The pet store has some part in this too. They do no inform enough. I was at walmart the other day getting a new puffer. (picked out a super healthy one and hands down their tanks were cleaner than petland or petco) There was a little kid with his mother that were looking at getting fish. She wanted a betta and he wanted a puffer for a .5gal bowl. I just couldnt watch them do it. I told him in that it was a horrible idea for the puffer. They ended up not getting a fish at all because they thought it was too much work.

I think a fish tank is a real idea for a kid but the parents have to be there to help them do it. Would have to make it a family thing so it wasnt just work for the kid. Just people dont want to step up and do it.

I don't see a parent getting a tank for their child as a bad thing. A child loosing interest in a pet in natural. It is up to the parent to take up the responsibility if possible.

I couldn't read the ad but, I thought that placing an ad was actually a good thing. At least the owner is seeking a new home and not killing it outright behind the child's back.

My daughter has her own fish, @ 3. They're all the same fish I've attained over the years but I let her take part in as much as she is willing/capable of....
