I kept a SAP with a pair of dwarves in a planted 29, lots of rocks and wood, for almost a year, with no issues. The SAP defiantely stayed out of their way, but he never had any nips and when they annoyed him too much he'd take a swipe at them then go about his business. No one was ever injured though, and everyone got plenty to eat.
I recently moved them to an extremly heavily planted 33XL tank, and haven't seen the dwarves since. I don't know if they are too busy searching for snails and shrimp (the tank was loaded) to come and beg for food or if something in the move shocked them... I haven't seen them in over a week though.
