mushroom polyps dying???

Post by joeposch »

i have 8 mushroom polyps on my live rock. i am concerned about two of them. the two in question span about 1.5" in diameter. they have a white patch of something attached to them. has been there for 2-3 so far....what is it? is it bad? should i attempt to remove it from the polyp?

Possibly a fungus? Try gently brushing it off with a soft toothbrush.

Iodine is VERY toxic. Should not be dosed daily! My guess is you are overdosing. Are you testing for this? Not a supplement you really need to dose at all, IMO. do a large WC.

Well, i guess i figured it was good brcause it had a picture of mushrooms on it.
Now, i am just having live rock and mushroom polyps as for as 'corals' go. Is instant ocean's reef crystals worth using in your opinion? I can get 5gallon bucket of regular salt cheaper. Or with just mushrooms would half/half be adequate/useful? Thank you.

I'm not sure what you mean by "regular" salt. Is it a marine salt mix?

I don't think you need anything more special than plain Instant Ocean for keeping shrooms. Check into buying the boxes over the buckets, for a better deal.

Well, i have 3 options when it comes to lfs's, and i prefer to support local business, so i buy what i can from this little pet store in town rather than petco or petsmart. Plus, i got a really cool plastic plant tht is from the 70's still in it's package that she had there, and i was allowed to clean out all the snails from the tanks for free as long as i scoop them myself. :P
An update on the iodide 'pollution:' i did a 30% w/c and after a few days i addes more live rock and the puffer(s) quit pacing the glass and rubbing on stuff too!!! :) no more trace element foolishness for me.
