ring mark on puffer belly

Oh no! Sick fish?! Come here and see if someone can help!

Since this board has been up, we have found there are several questions that routinely get asked in order to help diagnose problems. If you can have that information to begin with in your post, we'll be able to help right away (if we can!) without having to wait for you to post the info we need.

1) Your water parameters - pH, Ammonia, Nitrite, Nitrates and salinity (if appropriate). This is by far the most important information you can provide! Do not answer this with "Fine" "Perfect" "ok", that tells us nothing. We need hard numbers.

2) Tank size and a list of ALL inhabitants. Include algae eaters, plecos, everything. We need to know what you have and how big the tank is.

3) Feeding, water change schedule and a list of all products you are using or have added to the tank (examples: Cycle, Amquel, salt, etc)

4) What changes you've made in the tank in the last week or so. Sometimes its the little things that make all the difference.

5) How long the aquarium has been set up, and how did you cycle it? If you don't know what cycling is read this: Fishless Cycling Article and familiarize yourself with all the information. Yes. All of it.

We want to help, and providing this information will go a LONG way to getting a diagnosis and hopeful cure that much faster.

While you wait for assistance:
One of the easiest and best ways to help your fish feel better is clean water! If you are already on a regular water change schedule (50% weekly is recommended) a good step to making your fish more comfortable while waiting for diagnosis/suggestions is to do a large water change immediately. Feel free to repeat daily or as often as you can, clean water is always a good thing! Use of Amquel or Prime as a dechlor may help with any ammonia or nitrite issues, and is highly recommended.

Note - if you do not normally do large water changes, doing a sudden, large water change could shock your fish by suddenly changing their established water chemistry. Clean water is still your first goal, so in this case, do several smaller (10%) water changes over the next day or two before starting any large ones.

ring mark on puffer belly

Post by christina »

Good Morning-New to puffers-- here is a quick bit about me. We bought some fish at an aquarium store (didn't know how horrible they were until they closed down)..turns out, was given all the wrong info. Last month, found a great place- getting on track but I still am far from knowing everything.

Water- 30 gallon tank, 3 puffers, 2 bumble g's, 2 silver "sharks"....Not sure of water numbers, I use the strips and test daily (sometimes 2x a day to make sure) - all of the colors have been in the "saltwater ideal".... Again, we are making progress figuring this stuff out but far from having a clue!

Here is my question- This morning, one of the puffers has a "ring" on his belly . His belly is white but still looks like he has developed a "water ring" almost like someone left a drink on a coffee table without using a coaster.....He is eating and swimming fine, all of the other tank mates look fine. Is this that ICH I've been reading about?

Thanks for the help-I've been reading the posts and already learning reading the info.

welcome to the forum ... probably a bite from another puffer. It happens when they are kept in cramped quarters and sometimes during transit.
if you follow me, you avoid stepping in the crap that I just did...

Jp is rite. Those are probably bite marks, sometime they are obvious, sometimes not. But when u said saltwater ideal, those fishes that u have may not be all suitable for saltwater. Which type of puffer btw.. 30g sounds overstocked. And best to use liquid test kits, strip are not accurate at all. What's your sg?

My guess these are Green spotted puffers in a non-cycled tank, along with 2 Columbian sharks & 2 BBGs?

Yes, that is a puffer bite. After reading those 3 articles, I'm sure you'll have lots more questions! ;)

Thank you so much for the info--- and everything you mentioned was accurate..... 3 GSP, 2 BBG's and 2 of the Columbian Shark (catfish). I skimmed through the articles you sent and you are right--- I now have tons and tons of questions :(

Where do I begin? I just started looking at bigger tanks --- I think that will be the first start.... after that? Thanks for the info!

Specific gravity. It's a measurement of the level of salt (salinity) in your water, determined by using a refractometer or hydrometer.
Yo ho, yo ho, a puffer's life for me.
