Since this board has been up, we have found there are several questions that routinely get asked in order to help diagnose problems. If you can have that information to begin with in your post, we'll be able to help right away (if we can!) without having to wait for you to post the info we need.
1) Your water parameters - pH, Ammonia, Nitrite, Nitrates and salinity (if appropriate). This is by far the most important information you can provide! Do not answer this with "Fine" "Perfect" "ok", that tells us nothing. We need hard numbers.
2) Tank size and a list of ALL inhabitants. Include algae eaters, plecos, everything. We need to know what you have and how big the tank is.
3) Feeding, water change schedule and a list of all products you are using or have added to the tank (examples: Cycle, Amquel, salt, etc)
4) What changes you've made in the tank in the last week or so. Sometimes its the little things that make all the difference.
5) How long the aquarium has been set up, and how did you cycle it? If you don't know what cycling is read this: Fishless Cycling Article and familiarize yourself with all the information. Yes. All of it.
We want to help, and providing this information will go a LONG way to getting a diagnosis and hopeful cure that much faster.
While you wait for assistance:
One of the easiest and best ways to help your fish feel better is clean water! If you are already on a regular water change schedule (50% weekly is recommended) a good step to making your fish more comfortable while waiting for diagnosis/suggestions is to do a large water change immediately. Feel free to repeat daily or as often as you can, clean water is always a good thing! Use of Amquel or Prime as a dechlor may help with any ammonia or nitrite issues, and is highly recommended.
Note - if you do not normally do large water changes, doing a sudden, large water change could shock your fish by suddenly changing their established water chemistry. Clean water is still your first goal, so in this case, do several smaller (10%) water changes over the next day or two before starting any large ones.

Duma lethargic this morning
Work up at the normal time, turned Dumas light on, and there he lay at the bottom. Usually when i turn the light on it starts window shopping and it's fins go crazy, but it just layed at the bottom, fins moving every so slightly, and tummy very gray. Tested the water lastnight:
ph 7.5, Nitrite 0, Nitrate .5, Ammonia 0,
Gets 1-2 snails everyday, and 1/2 cube of frozen blood worms every other day, lastnight being a feeding night.
No changes in the tank besides adding a few additional plants and moving others around.
Tank has been up for what, a month or so now? Doing the weekly water changes, and soon moving the brackish (if my salt every mixes)... Any ideas?

Re: Duma lethargic this morning
is that nitrate reading correct? .5 seems awfully low. Liquid test kits usually give a range as opposed to an exact number.
you mentioned that the tank was up and running for a month... how was it cycled?

Opps, typo, Nitrate - .25, using the API Master Freshwater test kit
I pulled cycled water from my 55 gallon tank, and put it in my 30 gallon, cleaning the filter media with the same water.
It did have an ick episode about 2 weeks ago, but I was able to handle that with salt and heat along with water changes.

Re: Duma lethargic this morning
It seems like a cycling issue, but may not be. Some times a puffer takes a while to wake up. Usually when sleeping their colors a muted and the stomach is darker.

Re: Duma lethargic this morning
I'm not overly worried, I know the water is cycled if not near close, but it's usually super active. I even went back in and checked on it before leaving for work, still laying at the bottom. Maybe it's like it's owner and just likes it's sleep
I'll see how it's doing when i get home.

Just to rule out one of the possibilities.. Did u rinse the new plants under running water before putting them in? Those plants could have pesticide on them.. I have heard some farms do use that to make them "look" healthier.

You mention an Ich episode two weeks ago, are you still treating or how did you treat it in just two weeks time? Ich resides on the gills of the fish and when you actually see white spots it's a pretty heavy infestation. This may be Ich related.
"Darwin swings...annnnnnd a miss. Boy Jim, Chuck's suffered at the plate tonight. He's 0 for 3 and I'm not sure he's recovered from that shoulder pull a few weeks ago. I'll bet the front office is re-thinking that contract."

Re: Duma lethargic this morning
I treated with heat and salt, as well as I started the brackish process today. WHen i came home it was perfectly fine, swimming, happy fins, white belly, etc. So I am assuming it just didn't want to wake up, kind of like how i feel most morningsDadof4 wrote:You mention an Ich episode two weeks ago, are you still treating or how did you treat it in just two weeks time? Re: Duma lethargic this morning
You should continue the treatment for a minimum of 2 weeks AFTER the last visible spot is gone.
You are getting sleepy... you only hear the sound of my voice... you must do water changes... water changes... water changes... water changes...
