Oh no! Sick fish?! Come here and see if someone can help!

Since this board has been up, we have found there are several questions that routinely get asked in order to help diagnose problems. If you can have that information to begin with in your post, we'll be able to help right away (if we can!) without having to wait for you to post the info we need.

1) Your water parameters - pH, Ammonia, Nitrite, Nitrates and salinity (if appropriate). This is by far the most important information you can provide! Do not answer this with "Fine" "Perfect" "ok", that tells us nothing. We need hard numbers.

2) Tank size and a list of ALL inhabitants. Include algae eaters, plecos, everything. We need to know what you have and how big the tank is.

3) Feeding, water change schedule and a list of all products you are using or have added to the tank (examples: Cycle, Amquel, salt, etc)

4) What changes you've made in the tank in the last week or so. Sometimes its the little things that make all the difference.

5) How long the aquarium has been set up, and how did you cycle it? If you don't know what cycling is read this: Fishless Cycling Article and familiarize yourself with all the information. Yes. All of it.

We want to help, and providing this information will go a LONG way to getting a diagnosis and hopeful cure that much faster.

While you wait for assistance:
One of the easiest and best ways to help your fish feel better is clean water! If you are already on a regular water change schedule (50% weekly is recommended) a good step to making your fish more comfortable while waiting for diagnosis/suggestions is to do a large water change immediately. Feel free to repeat daily or as often as you can, clean water is always a good thing! Use of Amquel or Prime as a dechlor may help with any ammonia or nitrite issues, and is highly recommended.

Note - if you do not normally do large water changes, doing a sudden, large water change could shock your fish by suddenly changing their established water chemistry. Clean water is still your first goal, so in this case, do several smaller (10%) water changes over the next day or two before starting any large ones.

At first I wasn't scared, I was sick. I have been looking for a tiny F8 for a long time, and no such luck. When Pufftastic said she wanted to rehome Luau, I was so excited. When I saw him just laying there, I was thinking to myself "there is no way, this can't be happening.." And then, almost crying, I touched him, hoping he would move but I didn't see his gills going. Then I picked up the tub, nudged him again just out of wild hope and he flopped! After I saw it, I yelled at Denzil "water, I need water!!" and it was then I became scared. I had little, but wild, hope, but I thought to myself that I was going to do my best because I wanted my puffer. As soon as Denzil brought the cup ( I set Luau's container down, and ran to him, it was a good thing I did because I fell) and poured it in there and his fins were going and he was floating funny. I thought I was going to have to euthanize him, but I told myself to calm down, that it's not treated water and that could be the problem. I was also messing with his stomach on the way home, noticing how his little belly was bigger than the pics Pufftastic sent me. It helped a bit, but I was still worried. I got him home and got in him the tank as soon as I could, and tried again to burp him. Scared that I wasn't doing it right, I posted real quick, searched for TPF article on Google (since Library is down) and tried again. That's when I got the bubbles out of him. Then he started to swim more than drift. After all that work, then I was really scared that I was going to loose him. He did swim really funny for about 10 minutes after that, and I think I held my breath the whole entire time LoL. Talk about walking on egg shells.

I totally panicked but, I didn't loose it (well, for the most part). I can't even put into words what I was feeling for the most part, but the fright came after lol. Now, after all is said and done, and I look at him, it's just disbelief. Still a little scared, but I feel that the worst has passed. He is tired, as he is not pacing much, and he sees me, looks at me funny, and hides. All I can think is, is that he doesn't know me, so understandable.

Sorry guys, I post about it because it helps me cope, and Denzil only understands to a point. At least I know I can post, and 99% of you totally understand where I am coming from.

Sacramento to Campbell? I didn't think it was that far...could have been worse. I am afraid if it was any longer, he wouldn't have survived ><

That's great news. Fingers crossed for continued improvement. What an ordeal.
It is absurd to talk of one animal being higher than another. We consider those, when the cerebral structure/intellectual faculties most developed, as highest. A bee doubtless would when the instincts were.

What do you mean empty? There was NO water?

If the fish was shipped in a bag that was about 1/4 full of water, that is normal. Less water is better for shipping.
No water. Because I'm a total dumbass and shipped him in a plastic container (with large wide rubber bands around it tightly) filled about 1/2 way with water and surrounded by styrofoam peanuts. And I lined the entire box with styrofoam sheets. And apparently ALL the water leaked out. I'm an idiot.
ah it happens, important thing is that goldie had time to make a difference. im sure mishandling in delivery didnt help either

jus85411, thank you for that comment about mishandling in delivery! The box was labeled "FRAGILE" on every side, but goldielocke says the post office lady literally tossed it onto the counter when she went to pick it up. In hindsight, I know that I made some poor packing choices, but the postal workers basically playing hacky sack with the box surely didn't help things.

xray, the last update I got from goldielocke was last night a little after 11:00, and he was doing GREAT. She said he was exploring his new aquarium, and greeting her at the front of the tank every time she went to look at him. I think this saga is going to have a happy ending!
Yo ho, yo ho, a puffer's life for me.
