Oh no! Sick fish?! Come here and see if someone can help!

Read this before posting!!

Since this board has been up, we have found there are several questions that routinely get asked in order to help diagnose problems. If you can have that information to begin with in your post, we'll be able to help right away (if we can!) without having to wait for you to post the info we need.

1) Your water parameters - pH, Ammonia, Nitrite, Nitrates and salinity (if appropriate). This is by far the most important information you can provide! Do not answer this with "Fine" "Perfect" "ok", that tells us nothing. We need hard numbers.

2) Tank size and a list of ALL inhabitants. Include algae eaters, plecos, everything. We need to know what you have and how big the tank is.

3) Feeding, water change schedule and a list of all products you are using or have added to the tank (examples: Cycle, Amquel, salt, etc)

4) What changes you've made in the tank in the last week or so. Sometimes its the little things that make all the difference.

5) How long the aquarium has been set up, and how did you cycle it? If you don't know what cycling is read this: Fishless Cycling Article and familiarize yourself with all the information. Yes. All of it.

We want to help, and providing this information will go a LONG way to getting a diagnosis and hopeful cure that much faster.

While you wait for assistance:
One of the easiest and best ways to help your fish feel better is clean water! If you are already on a regular water change schedule (50% weekly is recommended) a good step to making your fish more comfortable while waiting for diagnosis/suggestions is to do a large water change immediately. Feel free to repeat daily or as often as you can, clean water is always a good thing! Use of Amquel or Prime as a dechlor may help with any ammonia or nitrite issues, and is highly recommended.

Note - if you do not normally do large water changes, doing a sudden, large water change could shock your fish by suddenly changing their established water chemistry. Clean water is still your first goal, so in this case, do several smaller (10%) water changes over the next day or two before starting any large ones.

ichthyophthirius multifiliis on GFW puffers.

Post by RVS »

So thats all folks i need some help here, i try to find an article about this, but i realized that pufferpedia is not working.. Excuse me if i didn't search properly but its kind of urgent :(

A friend of mine recently get a bunch of FW & BW puffers for selling on the store... they arrived wit ICH, we separated them into individual tanks with correct parameter, after that BW puffs has no more ICH, but..... i don't know how to deal with ICH on the giant FW puffers.

1.- Parameters:
PH:7
Gh: 10
Kh: 5
No2: 0
Nh3Nh4: 0
Tº: 29º

2.- He has a 4" MBU and a Fahaka, both with ICH, they are in 2 separated 70g (it will be more, don't worry) tanks with this parameters:

3.-We are feeding with frozen (Defrosted with tank water and vitamins) shrimp, squid, crabs and live Zophobas, they are eating.

4.- No changes, we perpetrated tanks before puffers arrive, all fully cycled, no plants only sand substrate.

5.- Tanks where prepared 3 months after puffers arrive, they where all 1 year old FW tanks, and some where changed to BW in that time lapse.

So what should i do to cure ICH? Tº is 29º and we have no used medicine or salt, but some ones recommend it... is that ok?
i told him to do water changes cleaning very very well the substrate every 48 Hours.
Let there be light, and lit up the days... Let there be puffers, and they swam around the world...

OMG! nice post!
Thank you so much sevenyearnight! i was kind of worried about adding salt, cuz there are some folks that say that MBU an Fahaka don't like it at all... but if that article is checked and supported by TPF people, i´ll do it like i read!

I just have one more doubt...
i have some INSTANT OCEAN aquarium salt, should i use this one or just Table Salt?
Thank you!

Yes, that's correct.

1 teaspoon per gallon will give you a .1% salt level. The therapeutic dose for treating ich in goldfish is .3% (but the salt needs to be added .1% at at a time at 12-hour intervals). Not sure about treating puffers, though. Helpful, huh?
Yo ho, yo ho, a puffer's life for me.

Ummm im not only bad at conversions, seven, at maths at all!!!
But i suppose that doing the meds in 12 hours time lapses will be good, like Pufftastic said, i never had seen a puffer with ich...
