Mussels

So I ended up rehoming my dwarfs and changing from fresh water to brackish, once the filter had been adjusted to brackish, (as directed raising .2 a week) and once at .6 I went and got darwin my figure eight from my lfs. Ive had him a couple of weeks now, was feeding him on snails and blood worms, But Ive started to run out of snails, so I bought some "river shrimp" from the lfs 25 shrimp for £2.50 I figured maybe they'd have shells that may help like the snails. I also bought some fresh mussels, in bulk and froze them, I tried feeding him one today, split the shell in half and dipped one half in the water, he ate it fine, but was just taking bites from the flesh and his beak never went anywhere near the shell.

So to get to the point of this post

So im wondering am I meant to crush them so he has to bite bits of shell to get the flesh?

Also im planning on taking a trip to the coast soon to catch some crab and collect some cockels, so I can provide a nice variety of foods. Actually while im asking about foods, when I get crabs do I just cut off legs for him and bin the rest or can he eat all parts of the crab?

People generally pull most of the meat out so the puffer has to scrape the shell to get it's meal.

i smash them to pieces freeze em and then feed them bits and pieces of the mussels. i give them the meat and shell pieces here and there throughout the week
