This isn't something you want to rush. You can avoid mistakes, but you can't undo them once they are done.

For 30 gallons, 15 cups only should be added, if your buckets were filled to the brim, so realistically 13 - 14 cups would be enough.
The salinity will continue to rise until all of it is dissolved. Make sure you water down your next batch to compensate

If you have 30 gallons of water, and you originally added a half cup for every 5 gallons, and then added 12 more 1/2 cups, you've added too much salt (18 half cups?). Your target salinity should be <1.023 for a GSP.
For 30 gallons, 15, half cups only should be added, if your buckets were filled to the brim, so realistically 13 - 14 half cups would be enough.
The salinity will continue to rise until all of it is dissolved. Make sure you water down your next batch to compensate.

The total number of cups of salt that I added was 15 cups. Originally, I had added 6, 1/2 cups for a total of 3 cups of salt. This was measuring 1/2 cup for every 5 gallons of water, and I had 6, 5 gallon buckets. The back of the bucket (and you) said that I needed 1/2 cup of salt per gallon, or 15 cups total for 30 gallons. Because I had already added 3, I added an extra 12.....so if I did mess up, I did not know that I did because I was following the directions. Unless I totally did the math wrong. :?:

At this point I am way confused. I have no salt sitting at the bottom of my tank, I added 1/2 cup per gallon of water, as per the directions on the bucket, and I stirred it super well, and it's now been sitting for a while. The water isn't crystal clear, but it is getting there. Is what I did wrong? And if so, why is it wrong? The salinity at this point is 1.024, so it has dropped a point or so. I will keep checking it. I guess my only saving grace is that I have to add more water to it. I am really sorry, it wasn't that I was rushing, it was that I didn't know. I thought I was doing it right = /

You'll have to excuse me, I'm not feeling well today, and the math was obviously escaping me!
(I meant cups, not half cups, I thought you added 18 cups, because I'm *gifted* at math :/ )
I'M HELPING! :duncebl:

Ok, 15 cups for 30 gallons, but to stay on the low side, 14 cups may be enough to reach 1.022.
If your pumps are mixing the water around, the cloudiness is probably the undissolved solids. It will clear up.

I am really sorry that you aren't feeling good =( and here I am being a bug butt asking all these questions. It's still at about 1.024-1.025. I do want it to be about 1.020 or 1.021, I don't want to see it go above 1.022 ideally. Just going to be a CUC and Yoshi. Well, hopefully a clean up crew...I bought a bunch of shells today to put in the tank in hopes that it will confuse Yoshi and he will ignore the electric blue hermit that Denzil wants to put in there.....

It usually settles over night from my experience. There might still be a slight haze but that goes away on its own :).

Well, it's still very hazy = / it's getting there, but still funny looking LoL. Going to go grab the LR here in a bit (hopefully). We have to go grab some premixed water from Petco (I don't want to use my own) and then we are going to see the guy. Hopefully my tank will be full by tonight! I just worry about getting the LR the way I want it....how can I see if it's still cloudy lol

More updates with pics when I am done for the day!!!

91 lbs , that is a lot of rock. Did you purchase it from the LFS or from someone breaking down their tank?

Just curious at the cost...
if you follow me, you avoid stepping in the crap that I just did...

Salinity is at 1.024, and he sold it to me for about $2.20 a pound. He had a bunch of saltwater tanks in his garage, so I am not sure if he was breaking down a tank or he just had it. I just finished putting it in the tank...there is no rhyme or reason to it, other than I can't see what I am doing lol. I have to wait until the water clears more so I can rearrange it. He gave me almost 92lbs of rock, and I gave him $200 lol.

Quick question about the lights....right now I have the 65w daylight bulbs shining on them...do I need the moonlight (or blue lights) on them as well? BRB, we need to go get more water.
